I did this Video last spring. I just saw the "car coat" style in brown steerhide. Only two I've seen like that. They used this label in the 50s to replace the Sportclad label as far as I can tell. I see fewer leather jackets with this label. This label has steerhide, horsehide or no leather on them.

These are not the higher quality of the Sportclad labeled leathers, but interesting jackets that can be worn. My late 40s Sportclad MC jacket has leather very much like shinki horsehide.

Thanks for the vid. That black Windward style is cool. There was a vtg 60s black Schott Windward style being auctioned at the bay very recently, unluckily the price shot up immensely in the last seconds. I had hoped to finally score one of these.. in black, too.

Thanks. I have not seen a Schott rendition of the Windward style. I will have to keep my eyes open for one. I have a brown horsehide Windward original.

Terry, does the sportclad label pre-date the "made and styled in the west" penny's label? I often wondered if the two were produced side by side.

Awesome jacket. I think a saw a video about you trying this on amongst other jackets in size 40-42 and it strengthened my desire to get one of these. Love the whole "bomber jacket without knits"-concept, after all a leather jacket is made to last and the knits are always the weakest spot.

Here's a link to the auction I got overbid on. I did some digging to make sure it really is a Schott before first bidding and it appears Schott made this in a number of different variations. With and without epauletts and a number of different pocket configurations, among those also one in the classic windwar style with two chest pockets.

I saw that jacket when it listed for $125 buy it now or best offer. I made an offer just before it ended. I was too cheap. Could have had it for $90. The seller relisted and sold for much more. I felt great for the seller. I've been burned on steerhide Schott jacket.

That jacket is more like these Hercules

Interesting. I had a sportclad M/C jacket with a similar label and a penny's M/C with a similar label as yours but it had the "made and styled in the west" text under it. I believe these were both sold at retail stores and through catalogs but always wondered if one was priced higher or considered more desirable. Both were super nice HH. The sportclad was a touch nicer, button on mouton collar, red wool liner, felt more handmade.
Love your cataloging and note taking Terry, and I enjoy the videos. Especially seeing you wear them. It's quite amazing how well these jackets hold up and moreover... how much nicer they are than anything you could buy walking into a retail store today, particularly Mall anchor stores, which penny's and Sears once were.

"Made and Styled in West" with palm trees show up on Hercules and Montgomery Ward labels in the 50s. I'll see if I have a picture of that 50s Penney's label you are referring to. The Hercules that had the Made in.. label was a very light weight jacket, made more for Cali weather. I suppose the exotic nature of California was being invoked.

this is the Sportclad that has the shinki like Horsehide. I have not seen any other vintage jacket with leather like this. I've seen another from this era that looked to have a similar leather. This one still has the new sheen on it. One of the nicest jackets I have come across. Size 46.

Your MC must have been like this one. bought in 1947
