Garrett, I do not wish to do business with you now or in the future so please do not leave your unwelcome and inappropriate comments on my classified posts or any other threads I post for that matter. I do appreciate the advise and experience of fellow loungers which is where I've learned most of what I know about vintage hats; however, I do not include you among those individuals regardless of how much "tenure" you may have. There are certain individuals who humbly and unselfishly impart their knowledge and experience in a non-condensending way and then there are those abrasive know it alls who seem to have an answer for everything, even if the answer is not always correct. Lastly, I'm thankful you do not speak for everyone here on the lounge.

David, I left this alone and haven't posted or private messaged you at all. Nor have I expressed any interest to do business with you. Perhaps you feel the need to keep going because your outrageous pricing has left you with a hat you cannot sell. With 8 years of contributions and hosted photos I think I've more than earned my place on this forum. You seemed to agree with that at one point given your private messages soliciting my advice. Never had anyone treat me the way you have here and its an absolute shame the bartenders have not closed this up yet. But you won't have to worry - this little experience has shown me that it is indeed time to follow suit with the great contributors of this lounge who left for similar reasons. Adieu.

Sorry to hear this, Garrett. Purplesage's last post seemed to me like a fancy way of saying bump and it's regrettable to see the consequences.

I just came to say farewell to you, and thank you for your contributions to the Lounge.

I've been watching this thread with interest, but hadn't planned to post until I saw this rant. Garrett may not speak for everyone, but I'm sure there are others who do agree with him. Most people here ask fair and reasonable prices, while you invariably price at the extreme high end of the spectrum. I have bought many hats from members here, but I always look at your listings and shake my head.

Of course you are free to ask whatever price you want for your hats. I have no idea how many buyers you actually find here. I doubt many of the knowledgeable, long term members are among them. But (and I think this was Garrett's main point), if unsuspecting newbies pay your prices, that can inflate the market and become the new normal. It seems to me that is a fair topic for discussion in this forum.

You don't need to worry about doing business with me either. I've never been tempted to buy one of your offerings.

A week after a man's last post, you respond this way? A note like this should have been a private message, not a thread bump.

Whether you like it or not, you are posting to a public forum, so even people you don't want to do business with can comment on your posts. When it comes to public sales, people who are knowledgeable on a topic have every right to weigh in; in fact their feedback is critical to help guide buyers who may not know as much, and the sharing of that knowledge is what has made the Lounge great. Garrett is such a person; Alan is such a person. They know hats. By fighting with them and their knowledge, you appear to want to prevent your buyers from using that knowledge to make informed decisions.

So please, post any auction you want. Do not expect others to remain silent.

A

An unfortunate turn of events. I think, however, if someone were to make unfavorable posts, undermining the price I was asking and my ability to sell my product, I would be a little churlish as well. Although we are in a public forum, courtesy should apply for all parties. When in doubt, I would respect the person who's trying to market their wares and only provide feedback when solicited.

I would agree to an extent. Civility should be expected in such an environment.

But there is a counterpoint. A challenge of peer pressure is a valid method of societal control. Long time and frequent contributors are alleging something that might have some merit. Seems as though they are calling someone out for artificially driving up vintage hat price expectations here which does seem to have an undesirable ripple effect. We need to consider the total effect that we have both upon our group and beyond it.

I think that I will just continue to read and learn as the parties work their way through the discussion.

From the Classifieds sticky = "Also, be willing to accept suggestions from other members who may ask you to post better pictures, for example, or who may say outright that your item is not valuable and you should give up trying to command top dollar. "

I think the context of the underlined example is that this pertains to low value items or grossly misvalued items. Clearly, that isn't the case as the OP is selling is a rare and excellent condition hat. Further, the initial "suggestion" to the OP wasn't framed as a suggestion but as an abrasive demand, which spawned the heated exchange. Regardless, what I suggested was intended not to completely curtail feedback but to only provide such if it is clearly necessary, hence the 'when in doubt' clause.

I think I understand what you are saying. However, I am not seeing how the OP is artificially driving up the prices. It appears the OP posted a price, which seems to be high to some members here. If nothing else, the OP is testing what the market will bear. I don't see what market manipulation is going on here by the OP.

No market manipulation. Just trying to sell a hat. If someone is interested they can always make me an offer. I do this as a pass time so if I don't sell that hat it really is no sweat off me.
