I bought this black Stetson Excellent Quality fedora a while back with the intent of wearing it but alas it is too small at a size 6 7/8. The seller incorrectly listed the size but instead of sending it back I decided to keep it since it is a classic example of a period Stetson in excellent condition. The hat features a 2 1/2" brim with thin grosgrain bound edge and a 5 1/2" open crown which is wrapped in a 2" grosgrain ribbon. The trailing edges of the ribbon bow are unhemmed or frayed which was a popular style at the time. There is NO MOTHING or felt defects and the leather sweatband is still fairly soft and pliable with good stitching. $225.00 shipped CONUS ($235.00 International). If interested please contact me via PM or email.

Classic pre-40s Stetson in great condition. I am selling the hat for less than it's worth due to the small size. It would make a nice addition to anyone's collection and is still very wearable for someone who wears that size. Final Bump $200.00 shipped ($210.00 International).

Garrett show me the last pre-40s Stetson in this condition that didn't sell for this sum. You can always send me a PM if you want to make personal comments on the price I'm asking. If you're not interested in the hat and just want to make some sort of commentary on the price I'm asking don't bother. Generally speaking most 6 7/8 size hats don't demand as much as say a size 8 for example but then it depends on the individual hat. That would be like saying all size 8 hats demand a premium price. I'm just curious what you would ask for the hat if you were selling it!

Do a search with my name through lounge archives and you'll find what hats I listed in this size and age range sold for. Those figures remain close over the 8 years I've been selling on the lounge, Ebay, Etsy, etc. There are exceptions to this rule (rlk's 4 1/2 (56cm) pre-WW1 Huckel comes to mind) but I've yet to see the 6 7/8 - 7 market consistently realize such ambitious pricing...pricing you and timothiescloset on ebay would have us adopt it seems. I will not remain silent on sensationalism inflation especially when this forum's membership can single handedly drive the vintage fedora market that much further into the existing stratosphere. As Alan mentions in another of your classifieds "It is illuminating to do a search on eBay... completed listings."

I think this comment is WAY not proper.

Garrett, keep your side bars to yourself. Who appointed you the lounge pricing police anyway? If you think the price it too high, then keep it to yourself. I love it when people try to sabotage other peoples listings in the classifieds. I doubt you would appreciate it. As far as you weighing in on Alan's (lotsahats) comment, that is his opinion and not necessarily backed up by fact. His comment is also inappropriate in my opinion. If someone wants to haggle over a price a private message is more appropriate.

It would be in your best interest to heed the advice, experience, observations and general expertise of tenured loungers, David. Especially when myself and Alan represent probably 50% of the potential buyer pool in this fedora's age and size range. Only a handful of us go for the really old ones here. If there was a Classifieds hats victories, defeats and gripes thread I would have posted my comments there but since no such thread exists...[huh]

I'm sorry you feel that informing and protecting my fellow loungers from being ripped off is "sabotage to your listing." I have been fortunate to gain knowledge and experience from contributions of this forum's membership since 2006. Those contributions help to create informed buyers/sellers and is a wonderful part of this place. I will be forever grateful and indebted to those here who have helped in that process.

The market trending for hats such as the one above is one I can speak to easily as it is one I already own...

I'd also like to point out that Lotsahats is Aaron and alanfgag is Alan ;)

I am not sure if anyone else is going to have the Bartenders read your posts here, but I know I am. You do not belong on the lounge. It does not matter what your head or hat size is, nor how small your wallet is or is not....what does matter is your lack of judgement and the demeanor of that which you are posting. All this "do what I say or else" attitude is NOT what the Fedora Lounge is all about. I do not see your name ANYWHERE in "Fedora Lounge", do you? Perhaps you need to have your own website. But I can tell you this is NOT where you belong, no matter how long you have been around. The public comes here to see everything for sale and to get a chance to know if they want to join in and be of good cheer. No one comes here to see you have a tantrum and act as if this is YOUR website. When you are way out of line, you bring that to the entire internet...not just those of us that are here.

Cindy, I don't think we're reading the same posts. Garrett's pointing out what his years of experience on this board have shown, and knowledge such as his very much belongs on this board--indeed, is exactly what makes this board so worthwhile.

David finds some great hats, and he can ask whatever he wants for them, but that doesn't mean they'll be purchased at that price.

The market is what it is. It is best to debate current trends in prices, value, etc, in the Hats forum and allow sellers to market their goods at whatever price they feel they need to get.
If there's a buyer, it'll sell. But rarely, here in the classifieds, does anything ever bring a price I would call outrageously high. Members are too well versed in their game, and tend to skew to the skinflint demographic.
It's hard to keep still, at times, but it's best to let classifieds play out as they will.

This comes from a guy remembering being rather put out when Whippets were changing hands at a ridiculously inflated $50.

This is a delicate issue. I do not believe that Garrett or Aaron or I have any intention of sabotaging your classified listings. I have sold hats for more than I have paid for them, and for less than I have paid for them. The crux of the matter is that many of us (you included, I think) have learned a tremendous amount from participating in the lounge and we would like (and perhaps are obligated) to pass along this collective knowledge to newer members. As Garrett mentions, there is no other forum or thread to discuss hats for sale in the classifieds. There is, however, an alternate location for reaching a large pool of inexperienced hat buyers where no one can reply publicly to the facts offered in a listing description and that is eBay. Here, we discuss.

For what it's worth, IMO this hat is far more worthy of love and affection (price potential based on size notwithstanding) than a soiled 1950 Whippet with a dry sweatband. I'm tempted.

Always the true Gentlemen. I think for anyone observing the history of Stetson, this hat is being historical by means of the new hat being offered to showcase the anniversary of Stetson, do they not offer a new Excellent hat? I am positive the price on that particular NON vintage hat is a touch higher than this one, and has no past to it.

There is nothing wrong with looking out for others on the Lounge. But when there is no infraction involved, there is no reason to attack a seller. Perhaps an area on the "hats" part of the forums could be started with a title "Hat Prices gone Mad" for those that desire to vent their opinions of what is relative to the current trends of hat prices. But this is not a part of the forums to to so. And no matter what, collectively it is more important to maintain proper manners towards each other, then to worry about the price of doing business on the classifieds.

In good spirit, I have to thank you Alan as much as I also thank the Bartenders.

Funny how this was supposed to be a classified listing I placed for a pre-40s Stetson fedora and was not meant to turn into a thread related to what is considered a fair asking price for this particular hat or even that of a Whippet I also have listed in the classifieds. Whippet prices have fluctuated over the last couple of years but generally they still demand a fairly high price compared to a lot of hats. I've seen Whippets sell on EBay for upwards of $600.00 and I'm not even talking about what would be considered rare hat or even one in that good of condition. If someone wants to argue that an asking price for a particular hat based on the size is not consistent with the average listings on EBay then they need to look at all the variables and not just the type and size of hat. Those things include the overall condition of the hat, rarity, demand, the time expended to list and post photos of a hat as well as packing and shipping not to mention cleaning up the hat if needed. Generally, there is not as much of a demand for small size hats so they don't demand quite as high a price as large size hats; however, certain hats such as Whippets can still demand a fairly high price even for a small size one. Now, I could waste a lot of time researching Whippet prices over the last couple of years to prove my point since I have purchased and sold several Whippets but I have a life and better things to do. I have included a recent sampling from EBay of Whippets or Whippet clones just to illustrate that you get what you pay for. Many of the Whippets listed are not in that good of condition, are small size hats (size 7 and below), and are late 50s model Whippets or clones and yet they are demanding premium prices. Since Garrett likes to say that small size hats don't demand premium prices then what is his explanation for the asking prices of the small size Whippets in the sampling I have provided? I think I would be willing to fork over $200.00 for a rare pre-40s 6 7/8 Stetson before I would pay $300.00 plus from a circa 50s Whippet! And Aaron (lotsahats) carefully read the detailed descriptions and look at the listing photos so you see the true condition of some of these hats before deciding that the price I'm asking is too high. There will always be some people who want something for nothing. Lastly, for those who are using the classifieds to boost their own egos or advance their own personal agendas then I would appreciate it if you stay off my listings and start your own threads devoted to whatever you are disgruntled about.

The value of something is what someone is willing to pay in light of the conditions of a prospective purchase. To state a value (as a seller or a buyer) as 'fair' or 'reasonable' or to state an opposing comment is simply a vague speculative valuation on the part of the person and nothing more. Let the market (i.e., buyers and sellers) determine it's contextual value. Feel free to ask for whatever price you would like, Purplesage. It is your business right to do so. It is a nice hat you are offering. Hopefully, you'll find someone to buy it soon.

Garrett, I do not wish to do business with you now or in the future so please do not leave your unwelcome and inappropriate comments on my classified posts or any other threads I post for that matter. I do appreciate the advise and experience of fellow loungers which is where I've learned most of what I know about vintage hats; however, I do not include you among those individuals regardless of how much "tenure" you may have. There are certain individuals who humbly and unselfishly impart their knowledge and experience in a non-condensending way and then there are those abrasive know it alls who seem to have an answer for everything, even if the answer is not always correct. Lastly, I'm thankful you do not speak for everyone here on the lounge.
