Are the flatcaps in these old days bigger/wider made, because of better sunblocking on the sides?

i think it's just changing styles rather than practical considerations. if you go back further the caps were smaller than they were in the teens and 20s, e.g. 1897:

Great photo. Surprising how timeless some of the garments are, even if it is 100+ years ago.

I think cap size was purely fashion much like the moustache...I'd guess quite a few caps were homemade also from old clothes?
