3 Taubers "Civilian" Jackets

I hadn't done a Thread for some time. I do have several other Taubers threads if you are interested in the Brand. Just search Taubers with my name. Taubers has been a company I have followed after the 1st jacket deal I did here.

Taubers is listed as beginning business in San Francisco, Ca. 1941. This advertisement is from 1984. Quite a run!

Beginning a leather manufacturing business in 1941 was probably a bit of a struggle as wartime shortages and rationing of materials. Taubers may not have been in full production until the mid 40s. The Oldest Taubers I have seen was a A2 styled jacket. I have lost the picture though. The jacket pictured in the middle has a late 40s zipper and the earliest "Knob Hill" label. I have seen this style with a 50s zipper. That is the oldest I have seen to date.

The video touches on the Taubers "civilian" jackets. I have seen other 70s Civilian styles besides these, but nothing besides the black half-belt from the 1950s.

I placed a $425 offer for the brown Tauber HB that was posted on the Deals and Finds tread. The offer was auto rejected.
I not saying the asking price of $500 is off, I just do not want another jacket real bad at the present. Like Terry, I am partial to Taubers perhaps from growing up on the SF Penisula

The Brown jacket is probably a hair to big on me, not near the condition of mine, and it is not black. Then I saw the Harley jacket and went off the Cliff!

So I'm sitting on the Dock of the Bay, waiting on $$ to come my Way!

Chips Motorcycle Jacket by Taubers of California

What does a 1984 Taubers Chip jacket look like? I've got to figure this out, re-calculate, re-imagine.

Also, just my own observation, but the current JL M-500 jacket is basically a cleaned up version of the Taubers Chips jacket. Without belt loops, epaulettes, throat latch and kidney reinforcements. But everything else, the overall shape, or the bones of the jacket, is there. They are both from San Francisco? Could the Taubers machinists moved onto working for JL after Tauber closed down?

I've commented on your eye for detail being much better than mine. I often think of JL as they continue in business where the others are gone. The Bay area was a hotbed of garment manufacturing workers. They could have made their way around the different shops. I seen vintage 50s ads for leather workers and salesman in the Bay area newspapers.

I see the Ralphs-Pugh jackets in Langlitz jackets. I don't own a Langlitz to compare, but several RP jackets. You @Canuck Panda would be a great investigator in this area.

There are very few leads on Taubers, even from the Rin Tanaka book. And apparently he got his info on Taubers from Langlitz. Small world!

Taubers and RP were two very unique and interesting leather makers. The search for their catalogue continues!

Taubers line up appears very focused until the later 60s. This is a rough breakdown.


Late 40s through the 50s:
Primarily Cross Zip Motorcycle jackets, Straight zipped Motorcycle jackets, both are modified for Police/Duty work. One Civilian Horsehide half-belt, one Civilian A2 styles have been documented from this time. Given Taubers stared during the war I believe production was very limited until post-war.

All of these era jackets appear to be made in Horsehide only.

Below all have the earliest "Knob Hill" label.

1960s-1970s:
Horsehide leather shirts Cafe Racers with or without "Turtleneck" collar. The Cross zips and Straight zip MC jackets continue. Horsehide is dropped somewhere during this time. "Newer" styles evolve.
