21 Club goes tieless

Let's keep in mind that some clubs (NYAC, Montauk, etc.) are really clubs, and places like 21 and Cicada are restaurants that call themselves "clubs".

Yup. Good point. A town club, country club or beach club is different from a nightclub.

However, the Cicada Club is not a restaurant that calls itself a club. It is indeed a nightclub --complete with live entertainment and dancing-- that is held once a week iniside a restaurant called "Cicada Restaurant". The restaurant's owner is not in charge of the nightclub, and on most nights the club's patrons do not have to eat dinner there to attend the event.

But to Alan Flusser, a men’s wear designer in Manhattan who has been dining at “21” for 34 years, the no-tie policy “is unfortunate.” He added, “I’m a traditionalist, and I don’t think this sends the right message to young people.”

Mr. McGuire, though, insisted that the decision was not recession-driven.

But he allowed that the policy “could help the restaurant greatly in a time of difficulty.” Revenue, $18.5 million last year, is off by “double digits,” he said.

The restaurant has made other concessions to the economy, including free parking for all dinner patrons.

(For the record, he noted, ties are required in the 20-seat private dining room, the Wine Cellar.)

“There used to be a time when men wore white wigs, too,” he said.
