Yanks...get a 'grip!'

Thank Gad most of our Gent's Clubs and upmarket nightclubs still have a strict dress code of no jeans; no trainers; wear a jacket and tie.

What worries me most is that the virus starts in the colonies (ie: the USA) and then inevitably travels across the pond and embeds itself in UK culture [huh] WE LOVE our cousins in the States to bits...but we do seem to inherit some 'bad' trends off you (ie: baseball caps; shell suits; trainers; burgers; NO TIES or JACKETS in CLUBS  ).

The Bartender Team and Barack will be having words 'me thinks ;) '

It's all about money!

21 is goin' tie less because, well they want to not "exclude" people because so many men don't wear ties these days. They'd help business if they lowered their standard, that's the root of the problem, greed!

That's why we live in a disposable society today, make more, make it cheep so it wont last thus, forcing people to buy more... and also having it cost MORE to fix then to replace. Also, do what is comfortable, don't put effort into your appearance, go tie less, wear what you feel comfortable in no matter what; toss traditions out, no need to look sharp... The modern thought process is all about what's convenient... to have more, to have things do more, so you don't have to... when we step back and look, our lives are ran by our possessions.

I work the door at Cicada Club... I can't stop slovenly people who have reservations to eat there, but I can stop dancers and others who just want to see the show... I have turned a few people away because of the lack of dress. They will see people hanging out side smoking dressed to kill, they will see people come in and out dressed in ties or dresses... they will know that they would feel out of place and self conscious. So, they don't fight me on it. In time people will dress better to go out as long as they come to Cicada Club.

We just have to set a fine example to the rest of the world and show that it's a good thing to dress nice to go out. I remember walking home from the store with my girlfriend and we both were dressed nice as we always do and a lady getting into her car said we were a very refreshing sight... for her, it was nice to see a couple dressed respectable like. Refreshing is a nice way to put it I think... and I think most people do think that when they see people like us out and about. Just most don't speak up... then there's the others that point and laugh or make fun or make rude comments... it's an insecurity thing more or less because they were out classed by someone else.

I have visions of the Blues Brothers. "How much for the weemin? How much for the little girl?"

Oh wait, they were wearing ties. And suits. And fedoras. I guess what they're wearing doesn't say much about someone.

bk

They should totally let Superman in instead of the Blues Bros.

My NY club still requires a jacket and tie for dinner in the main dining room but have loosened the dress code for other areas of the club at certain times. When I was a kid you couldn't enter through the front door without wearing a jacket and tie; you had to use the service entrance.

My club is (and was) the same, with the exception of their beach facility. Interestingly enough, "formal" hats for men (i.e., fedoras) are not allowed anywhere in the club. We do still have "Junior Smokers" for the junior members: black tie, cigars and a boxing ring set up in one of the main rooms.

They should leave the tie rule intact, but reduce the stratospheric price of their hamburgers. That would attract me, at least.

Marc, you have read my mind.
I was just going to comment how the 21 Club can lower their prices to stay competitive and never mind this dress code business. 20 dollar appetizers and 40 dollar plus entrees are keeping away more business than to have to wear a tie to dinner.

True but there are a substantial number of restaurants at that price-point in Manhattan and very few have dress codes.

And this is why the Cicada Club in Los Angeles is not attracting busloads of tourists who want to experience a night of "old Hollywood glamour." The club's "impresario", Maxwell DeMille, insists that patrons wear coats, ties, and dressy attire. Tourists to L.A. don't tend to pack those duds in their suitcases.

just curious but isn't this because traditionally a gentleman was never to wear a hat of any kind indoors? [huh]

dashing Paddy. Quite an impressive wall of plaques also.

I'm not familiar with the Cicada club, but I wouldn't want busloads of tourists at my party spot.

"Club"

Let's keep in mind that some clubs (NYAC, Montauk, etc.) are really clubs, and places like 21 and Cicada are restaurants that call themselves "clubs".
