2 inch ribbons

Hello!

Lately I´m thinking about putting a wider ribbon, preferably 2 inch, on my hat. Does anyone here have a hat with a 2" ribbon? And one last question, do you know where I can get one? The widest ribbons I could find were 1 1/2".

Many Thanks!

Hello, Tremolo, and welcome.

I reached for what i thought was a 2-inch on an Adam porkpie I have, but it's only 1 7/8. Looks good, though, if a bit tired. Good luck on your search, and post a picture of the result if you're successful. :)

Try ebay. I recently found 1 spool of 23 lignes almond color cotton & rayon ribbon there. It wasn't cheap.

Contact Art Fawcett, he has more ribbon than anyone on the planet, and I've seen some of his hats posted here with 2" ribbon.

I have a hat from Art that is two and one quarter inches wide. I am not sure that Art sells his ribbons as he only uses vintage on his hats and may not be able to replace them.

I've got one...

My black Bond fedora has a 2" (well, it's 1/16" shy, but I'll round up). The wide ribbon gives it a more formal look, in my opinion. I think that it also gives the appearance of a smaller crown as well. The crown is 4" on the front, up to where the crease is.

Perhaps a wide ribbon could be used to balance out the proportions of a hat relative to your face shape/type. For instance, if you have a tall-crown hat and it just doesn't seem to suit you right, perhaps adding a wide ribbon could help. Here's a site I look at sometimes:
http://www.millerhats.com/hatcare_index/hatfaces.html

This place sells 2" ribbons, but I've never dealt with them, nor do I know much about ribbons:
http://www.hatsupply.com/grosgrain_sweats.htm

I am curious to know though, how those ribbons rate in terms of quality and how well suited they are for hat use, as I am thinking about getting a new ribbon for my panama for next season. Any info would be nice!

Good luck!

looks good jpbales!
Hatsupply.com only offers 2" ribbons in black, which is good for my gray hat but now I´m still looking for a dark brown one for my Miller fedora.
Wow, I didn´t think it would be so hard to find one ;)
But somehow it´s part of the fun for me

Tremelo try contacting Marc Kitter of Adventurebilt Deluxe. He uses a smaller dark brown on his hats but may be able to point you in the right direction, and he is in Germany also.

Good idea, thanks Indycop! I´ve just sent him an email :)
Maybe I´m having luck this time, Art Fawcett didn´t have one.

I might have some, but be warned, it will probably be grosgrain, usually cotton/rayon.

If interested, let me know and I'll look through my stash. I am looking for something from Germany, maybe we can arrange a trade.

Yes. The ribbon Vintage Betty is writing about is the correct item. You're looking for [about] 23 ligne cotton/rayon grosgrain ribbon.

To answer your question seriously, the ribbon choice is up to you and the "look" you want to achieve.

If you look at the dashing jpbales above, he gives one option for ribbon; I'm guessing he is wearing a rayon vintage millinery ribbon, but that's entirely a guess for a quick 3 second look. You could also purchase modern satin, modern rayon, or go to your local fabric store and get something new. There is:

  • What you like ribbon
  • Vintage inspired ribbon (usually looks like a standard, solid color vintage ribbon, but costs much less and is flame-retardent in most cases)
  • Actual vintage (Costs more, may or may not have higher quality, not flame retardent, usually can find some unusual ribbons)
  • Antique ribbon (Denoting ribbon of 100+ years. Pros: High quality and unique; cons: Color may run, not flame retardent, can get expensive)

All the links and references above are excellent. Just note that a sweat goes inside the hat and millinery ribbon, though used for interior banding in some hats (especially women's hats, but that's another subject entirely) is typically used in the outside of hats when discussed in this forum. Also, carefully compare the ribbon provided in the links to the ribbon in my picures below; note the weave difference.

Being in Germany, you have some advantage over Americans in that it may actually be easier for you to find vintage ribbon.

Here is a sampling of various kinds of ribbon, to give you an idea of the wide variety of ribbon available:

If you will be wearing this ribbon in the rain/snow on your hat and it's vintage/antique, you may want to test it for color-fastness or else waterproof it so it doesn't ruin your hat.

If this isn't enough samples to start visualizing your hat embellishment, I can probably post more photos of a variety of (antique) ribbon, so you can see more comparisons before you start looking around.

I should also point out that in photos #3 (with the ruler) and #4 (the blurry shot with the multi-ribbons) they are all saw-toothed edge, which is considered appropriate for women's hats ONLY.

Best-
