1st attempt at making a thin ribbon...

RBH

Here is my 1st thin ribbon placed on my former Resistol cowboy hat turned fedora.
I have to say the bow was not too easy. But with more practice it should come together. This beater is a good hat to learn on.
Overall not bad I dont think.

What's not to like? It looks fine! Did you add the end pieces seperate from the rest of the bow? I started doing it that way. Then I went to using one ribbon piece for the whole bow except the little square knot in the middle. I can'r really see any problem with what you did, RBH. Were it my hat, all I'd do differently is move the end pieces closer to the crown but that's only because I'd match it to the Open Road I own which has been my model. Post more shots! It's great to see your work. Keep it up!

Thanks Dean, After I finished I thought the same thing. Im not crazy about undoing the stitching but.. thats the way you learn.
I have a brown #1 Quality fur felt Stetson cowboy that I recently won on OFAS. After I fedorize it the ribbon will be next. [Open Road style of course close to the crown]

It looks great. Did you use milliners ribbon?
Mark, I bought grosgrain from a fabric store. It looked real close to what was on my Campdraft, maybe a little bit thicker material.

Thank you everyone else for the kind words. Steve and Art have nothing to worry about from me. But it is SO MUCH fun doing this and seeing a somewhat good looking lid come from something I had considered throwing away.

You said it, brother, thank you for helping all of us trust our abilities, RBH! You don't know how many times I had to stitch, unstitich, stitch, unstitch...and over and over again, and yet...I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! I'm still looking for more!

I used to use fabric store ribbon, but it's hard to make it go around the corners. I also found it's hard to match the hat color with the ribbon... A lot of reds and purples, but not many earthtones. The milliners ribbon is made to go around a curve and is much easier to lay flat against the hat.

I feel the same way about the process. I like making things and get a kick wearing something personal to me.

Very nicely done!

RBH,

Very nice looking lid you got there. I like it as much as the bash you gave your Campdraft. Is the brim down in back on this one? -- kind of a cool, unusual look for an "Open Road" type hat.

Although my hat collection is small at the moment, I'm really interested in a thin-ribbon like the ones you wear -- having just lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and now back in my hometown of Montgomery, Alabama, it's a look that fits well in these parts, and says formal and laid-back at the same time.

Thanks Simon!
Yes the brim is turned down in back, this hat being a western and a stiff wool felt made it harder to turn the brim up. But I kinda like it for my going to the farm hat. I plan on converting some more old westerns and will post them also. If you run across one [even the wool kind] and its not to pricey, give it a go and trim the brim and replace the ribbon. Its fun to see what you can do on your on.

Yes for some reason I think the thin ribbon fits the South real well, its a classy look while not being too dressy. I do think it can be a dress hat and looks well with a great tie.

I have kin in Athens Alabama and was just over there in July, my folks were from the Round Island area around Browns Ferry there in Athens.

Good for you! Nice work, however I have to give you even MORE credit for having the guts to attempt this... Not me... NO way!

Oh yes you could!!!
Thanks for the kind words HL
Like I said to Simon if you can find you an old western style just trim the brim to the size you want , and you can even put a wide ribbon on it. My hat was one that I considered trashing but now am glad I didnt.
p.s. I plan on working on the bow to give it a more Open Road look.

These hats with the thin ribbon, seem to really have a great crossover appeal. They are the hat of an Outdoorsman with classic rugged yet relaxed charm, and are very classy, they eminate both Leadership qualities for the wearer and a sense of well to do.

Very well put, John. RBH and I, and others, resonate with your words. I'm "up north" in Michigan and I think the thin ribbon suits this neck of the woods quite well. This doesn't mean disdain for thicker ribbon, just a soft spot fior the "straight and narrow".;) (Note my present avatar from an old Stetson ad. He's got a tie on, and a thin ribbon on the hat.)
