The black leather buttons look good, I think. Better in person than in the photo.

I considered using grey/blue bakelite-esque buttons that would match the fabric color, but they sort of faded in and looked bland.

Black woven leather buttons are more muscular, more earthy and tweedy; they're not afraid to stand out. What can I say? They do the trick for me. :)

P.S.: Buttons are a lot more important to a garment's look than many people realize.

Agreed. If you have something modern that looks vintage, replacing the buttons with vintage ones does the trick. I do this A LOT with my repro dresses. And really, it doesn't cost much more.

I like the buttons too, Marc- I guess I just meant if you wanted to get really nitty gritty you might be able to tell the age by looking up reaaaalllyy close, like at shanks and stuff :)

Maybe this is the answer

Here's an idea to lay on you, perhaps the suit was deliberatly designed that way for an older gentleman who simply wanted a traditional suit.
My grandfathers suits from the 70's have a real fifties style about them whilst maintaining a contemporary feel.

This could be a factor back then that people wanted to buy a new suit but as older adults just couldn't buy something too modern, it just would look silly.
My grandmother had a funny thing where she wanted to always replace a worn item with an exact replica and towards the mid 80's would get upset when she found out they just didn't make that product in that style anymore.
For example she had the same style purse since the early fifties, when one died she just went into the store and picked up another in the exact same style and colours...maybe this is the answer as to the suits style....what do ya think
