Found this photo of then new President Nixon enjoying a football game, December 1969:

Compare to JFK enjoying a baseball game, April 1961:

It does show that as late as 1969 you could still find men (albeit sitting with the president) wearing suits and ties to a sporting event. Eras never really have red lights that go on and off.
OK, trivia: How many other famous politicians can you identify in these pics? I see LBJ, George Bush Sr., and Mike Mansfield. Any others?

And I think I see Charlie Halleck and Everett Dirkson, at the far left (ironically). They were the Senate Republican leader and House Republican leader for a while, and their joint press conferences were known as the Ev and Charlie Show.

Actually at southern universities / colleges you still see some people (even students) wearing sports jackets and ties to college football games.

I was 10 and wore baseball and cowboy hats - usually only one of each, which was all that could be afforded at the time. In fact, the cowboy hat was a souvenir of my mom's from when my parents went to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon (1956). My dad still has his, basically unworn.

December 1969 I had my 23rd birthday. I had just gotten out of the Marine Corps in July, and my hair was pretty much the longest it's ever been, half way down to my butt. Definitely definitely not Golden Age. I was living in Cambridge, Mass., a great town.

Hasn't been too many years since Big Orange blazers and ties were de rigeur for UT alumni at home football games. The hard core Big Orange fan would have a Big Orange three-piece suit; seems like John H. Daniel in downtown Knoxville made 'em. The alumni section at Neyland Stadium would look like the orchestra on the Lawrence Welk Show....

Interesting that even that many men were still wearing hats in 1969. I don't remember my dad, grandfathers, and uncles wearing hats at that time but then again I was only 11 years old and it probably didn't make an impression on me at that age.

Pretty much in certain areas or cities, yeah. Come to think of it, in two European films of that year, The Sicilian Clan and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (James Bond), a number of the extras in the cast (as well as some of the stars) were even still wearing fedora or trilby hats. Most of these extras were middle aged and older though, with the youngest in the two films being George Lazenby as Bond. This is just an example from film, but I'm pretty sure these extras may have been real, off-screen hat wearers too.

No adult men I knew wore hats except for my grandfather who was bald. He usually had a short brimmed hat in a fedora style, if not in actuality, especially as the 60s moved into and through the 70s.

This is true- when watching college football on the television, it seems like many of the spectators from southern and midwestern universities wear their school ties and blazers. Personally, I like to see some of the coaching staff wearing ties, dress shirts, and slacks on the side lines.

Many, many, years ago, like twenty, maybe, I was at a UCLA football game and an eldely gentleman, perhaps above sixty years of age, walked past us to his seat in the aisle in front of us; he was wearing a white shirt, blue and gold striped tie, a blue blazer, and comfortable looking hat with a thin, thin brim. For a football game, how cool.

This surprised me, my grandpa (born 1930) and great grandpa (born 1902) both wore hats, Great-Grandpa until the day he died, and my Grandpa still does, but sometimes wears ball caps and western hats. Other than them and a few old-schoolers I know, and from what I asked my dad (he was 9 then) had wearing was only for much older guys by that time.
