Interesting as you point out that the “Clear Beaver” term for the 5X appears there in the ‘36 catalog. I believe the term existed previously for Clear Nutria and Clear Beaver.

Here just for repeat reference a screenshot:

I believe I found the year Stetson had dropped their prices, 1932. Below are 2 more N. Porter scans, from 1930 and 1932. The higher end hats appear to have the biggest discount, two more examples of 5x CB “Porter” included.

Sorry we all missed that one. A rare bird, indeed.

This sold October 25th so I’m guessing no one here got it. I made an offer and asked the seller to contact me if he received a higher offer and allow me to beat it. I never heard back until after he accepted an offer. I wouldn’t have fit me, but I would have loved to get to know the hat.

Intriguing to look at the auction photos more closely... If the LOTXXXX sequence is a useful marker, this hat looks c.1930 to me... earlier than I think of for that front of sweatband STETSONXXXXX stamp style. But it's been a while since I paid close attention. A nice find for someone - thanks for sharing it here, Brent.
