Supernatural throws out caution as Cuenca to me. Can't see the inner circles well enough to know for sure.
Cuenca or Montecristi, it still is spectacular weave.

Is there anything in particular which makes this hat bring such (IMO) a "premium" price? I had my eye on this one as well.....and was a little surprised at the closing price.

I saw the hat also and the sellers pictures were terrible...

If the hat had a nice tight weave good even small back weave and that aged patina. 20 rows per inch is not a high weave count...

I like you was suprised at the price...

Sweet tap-dancing Jesus! It simply reinforces the fact that idiots have more money than sense.

So tell me, where do you find a ready supply of 1930s or 1940s
Montecristi Panamas with that aged look, a fine Supernatural
sweatband, and a classic period optimo block? Because if you
have a supply at a good price, I'd like to know about it.

I didn't buy that hat. But if I were to set out to buy a new
one of comparable weave, block, and sweatband, it would no
doubt cost at least as much. PanamaBob's Equadorian blocks
are not comparable (though fine no doubt). If I set out to buy
any other major piece of whatever from that period I might pay
more, whether it be a suit, classic design floor lamp, or whatever.

Some people do have more money than time. Some people know what
they want and don't want to fool around. Some people spend that
much or more on all sorts of things we'd find to have a lot less lasting
value, like gasoline or cigarettes or pornography or ammunition or
(name your pet peeve here). $214.59 ain't that hard to spend and
we already know people are spending that kind of cabbage on hats.

Frankly, I'm tired of seeing people whine about hat prices and,
conversely, boast about deals. It's dull, people. This is a forum
about hats and vintage stuff and the Golden Era. Let's discuss
what a fine hat that is. Let's discuss the relative virtues of the
golden patina. Let's talk about why the old Supernatural sweats
were softer than the ones we find today. Let's honor the weaving
skills of a long dead weaver and compare it to today's work.

I don't mean to single out Twitch, or anyone else in this thread.
My apologies. But let's shoot for a higher level of discussion.

Done ranting. For now.

When I was at a certain unnamed hat shop recently (not in Florida...) I was shown naked, blank, panama bodies that cost $1500. Ripoff?? I dunno. Waayyy out of my price range ($5K for the finished piece) - definitely. I understand that some Ecuadorian craftsperson may spend a lifetime on a couple of hats, but not for me. At ~$200 I'd probably take a vintage over a new one, whether fur or grass - any day.

I put in my 2 cents worth - I still got change...

Let me guess....Hawaii or New Mexico?

Could have been San Francisco.

PanamaBob- is it true that some hat weavers
spend a lifetime on a couple of hats? How far
off is that?

As for Supernatural, I have seen a few.
As far as I can tell, they were an importer.
I have at least one with a Supernatural sweat band
but the Stetson logo. Love to hear from someone who
knows more.

Hmmm...let's just say Anthony (or was it Vincent?) wasn't happy when I mentioned that I had seen about 50 assorted panama bodies at a thrift here in Fla. for $5 each and knew not what they were...:rage:  :rage:  :rage:  [huh]

I don't have 200 beans, but I was watching that sale with interest because it was one fine looking hat, even in the rather poor photographs that were posted. Perhaps Marc can persuade the buyer to post some nicer pics for the documentary sticky.

Oh, then I know exactly where those hats came from and exactly how much they cost...:p In fact, chances are they actually passed through these dirty, grubby little hands typing this up. Wow, talk about a markup. That is incredibly surprising. No wonder they can't sell them. Wish I was that greedy!@:eusa_clap

The best weavers might spend 4-5 months on one hat, but it isn't the only hat they are weaving at the time.

Congrats on post 1000!

So how many master weavers are there? BBB claims there are only twenty or so.
