Stumbled across this link looking for something else online. A set of photos of criminal mugshots from Newcastle Upon Tyne (for those unfamiliar with England's geography, that's up in the NE corner of the country - traditionally regarded as a very working class area, once heavily industrialised). Some fantastic 1930s wardrobe looks, representative of what the working classes wore in those days. Interesting too to note that back then it was thought worthwhile to capture how these guys looked in a hat or cap - not something you'd see in a 2024 set of mugshots. Couple of examples:

I love this guy's knitwear:

The long lost Gallagher brother?

If they ever make a movie about this guy, he should be played by Paul McGann:

Really interesting, do you know what is meant by "Comp" in these? They all seem to be fresh.

Also this really reminds me of the 1920s mugshots from Australia that were popular online for a little while.

Most of them are wearing suits or similar.

Another one with the full write up of Leslie "Squizzy" Taylor, he had a show about him. Pretty similar to the English ones, they even chose to capture him in a hat as well.

"Comp" is short for complexion.

There's a definite similarity. It'd be interesting to compare them with similar in a bunch of places and see regional / national variations in when men wore at the time.

As @Peacoat has noted, 'Comp' means complexion. I'd imagine they're all listed as 'fresh' because they're all still relatively young - most seem to be in their late 20s, some early 30s of those shown in the article.

Great thread!

Here are a few from Manchester in the late 1800s / early 1900s.

He was arrested for thieving purses:

A pair of coal thieves:

For theft, larceny, assault:

For stealing a bicycle, and gaming:

These next two made me laugh. They were getting a mugshot of them by whatever means necessary.

Purse thief (his 'trade' is actually noted as thief!):

"Paddy the Devil", a sailor, was arrested in 1893 for 'coining' - the 'practice of clipping precious metal from the edge of coins or reproducing coins in their entirety but from base metal':

Love these pictures, real life Peeky Blinders. Also love the summary of Mr.Dodgson "A general thief and bad character" lol, simpler times haha.

Cheers
