Those images a very reminiscent of my parents old house [1940's], which was a tied-to-the-job property with my fathers employment... that had fireplaces in every room, but we never used the open fires in the bedrooms. We had a Rayburn range in the sitting/dining room, which was wonderful, as both heating and a cooker; which my mother used all the time... it was the only warm room in the house, and we rarely used the main living room, apart from special days, such as Christmas. My bedroom could get so cold in the winter, that I would have ice on the inside of my window... my kids don't have a clue, in their centrally heated room

Yes, I remember ice on the inside of windows as we only had fires downstairs.
It was terrifying on the occasions that it would melt slightly around midday and fall to the ground with a CRASH.
