I`m gonna spill my secret after I`ve done my purchases and sifted through the stock...(hope no one blames me!)....I stumbled across this site a few months ago...

http://www.rmr-hats.com/

Roberto Manzino, a hat dealer in Italy since 1870 is offering new old stock Italian hats for a discount to (then or now?) prices. See the "end of series" button.

I`ve sourced my Barbisio`s and Panizza`s from him, and whist he seems not to to answer to mails, he does ship by Fedex within a day or so of receiving the order, and after the purchase the site takes the hat you bought off the sale list. The payment is linked to Paypal. A very good service is offered.

The Panizza`s are all 1970`s and are as new I can tell you. There are a few grades, with the Ediston model being the finest, produced at what is now the Italian hat museum, http://www.museodellartedelcappello.it/index.htm, in Ghiffa...now long closed. I`ll be watching to see how far his stock depletes...happy hunting!

I stand corrected if need be. I am not in anyway linked to this operation, only purchased from them. I`ve seen sales done in this section (hat measurer recently) - all I was doing was giving information of a hat source. Bartender: feel free to judge, or I can delete my entry if I made a bad judgement.

Thanks for the link. I was sorely tempted by a Panizza in camel. Couldn't quite pull the trigger, though. It looks fantastic, but would require a little stretching. Also, with shipping, the one I want was pushing $300.

I`ve been eyeing that camel one too! Postage is steep (they use FedEx), but it`s with you in a week. I guess the way to look at it is you are buying a piece of history (in some case 30year+) in MINT condition for the price of a new hat. They have never answered to my mails...if only they would post normal airmail, they might move their stock, but then they might not want to destroy their hat shop if all the old ones were sold...who knows!?

So, the two Panizza Ediston hats I ordered, the camel one discussed earlier as well as a silver/light grey one arrived last thursday, just before I was leaving for midsummer celebration, so the total turnaround time from order>arrival was just 4 working days.

As far as I can see, the two hats are exactly identical save for the color. The felt seems to be on the tinner side, has that characteristic nice smooth 'nappy' feel from the shaved finish and is soft and flexible to the touch - not quite as soft as on my vintage Cav, but my 70ies layman Dobbs feels like it'd been made of cardboard in comparsion.

I left the silver one at home, but here's some pictures of the camel one for those interested.

front - crown has some taper, mostly due to the crease

The inside (on a related note, the silver gray one comes with a dark wine-red liner that looks really awesome in my opinion)

The hat description characterized the model as "wide brim" - by comparsion to other period hats, I guess it might be. The brim measures exactly 5 cm, or two inches at the front snap, and the distance from crown-to-end-of-brim in the back measures about 4.2 cm (~1 5/8" inches) thanks to the heavy curl.

Surprisingly(? - not sure exactly how 'modern' that invention is?) the liner is actually fastened with stitches instead of being glued on:

I really like it - it's a nice hat for summer wear (at least up here in the north :D ), though I think I might try to change the factory block into a c-crown once I get back home.

Ignoring the henious shipping charges (cheaper/hat if you order several of course :p), I'd say these are pretty nice value for your money if your alternative would be to buy something contemporary off-the-rack, at least for us Europeans - the terrible/awesome dollar-euro exchange rate(+potential customs?) will obviously be a dampening interest factor to people living across the big pond.

Great hat m000m000! And thank you for posting pictures and comments.

:eek:fftopic: Maybe we should have a thread on the Lounge where we road-test and rate different models of contemporary hats?
