100$, and nothing to buy...

Hello. I recently came into a crisp, new Benjamin, and want to spend the money on a fedora. I've been looking all over the internet for a fur felt hat that fits my price-range (or perhaps a little bit over), but I need something with a wide-brim (around {ideally} 3"). Do you think perhaps you could point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jay Steel

Ebay. No question. Unless you're a huge hat size, you can get a lovely vintage hat, in new condition, for $100.

Jay. What size are you? With a brim of that size you might want to consider an open road as they were made over a long period of time.

Kinda depends on how soon you want that hat, Jay, and your tolerance for risk. There's little doubt around here that a hundred bucks goes much further in the vintage market than in the new stuff, but buying online has its hazards. Pictures tell only so much. Will the hat fit? (Old size tags aren't always reliable, and sellers' measurements are even less so.) Is there damage that doesn't show in the pictures? And sometimes a hat that looks good in the pictures, and indeed is a good hat, just doesn't look right on one's own head. (I have two or three like that.)
A couple of hours searching through old threads here is time well spent. You'll acquire the knowledge and vocabulary to say precisely what you like (or don't like) about a particular lid. You'll learn what to look for, and what to steer clear of.

Best value

for $100 is doubtless on ebay. New hats in that range just aren't up to the standards. I'd look through this foum, ask a few questions, figure out what color and style you like..get your size down...and then bid...and wait to get a hat you like in your size. Impatience is the downfall of ebay bidders.

3 inch brim

If you decide to go for a new hat, I think Akubra's the way to go. For a 3" brim, check out the Drover and the Bushman. The Squatter also has a wide brim, but a very low crown. All three are open crowned. I know Hatsdirect carries the Drover and David Morgan has the Bushman. For a Squatter, see Aaron.

I've been around to the different sites, and checked out Aaron's. While searching, I found this:

http://www.aussiebushhats.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_22&products_id=71

The website says it's a squatter, and everyone else seems to be selling it for $98. These guys sell it for 65.50 (around 85-90 with shipping). Is this worth it? Or should I spend the extra money and get it from a different hatter?

Sincerely,

Mr. Jay Steel

Even that particular squatter? I'm not entirely sure about that one in the link I posted. I know for certain that the squatters at Aarons's site, and David Morgan's site are legitimate, I'm still wondering about that one at "Australian Hats". Seems like a great deal... almost too great?

Sincerely,

Mr. Jay Steel

An Akubra Squatter is an Akubra Squatter whoever happens to be selling it. The price differences are usually because of location - Australian vendors have Akubra hats for less than most North American vendors. Compare prices including shipping and any applicable taxes, do the math, order your hat from whomever you feel offers the best service and or price, then enjoy.

Oh yeah. Then take pictures and post reviews so we can all benefit from your $100. :)
