Forgot to post! I bought a replica made by a new York milliner, Rodney Gordon. It was made for a stage production in the '90s I think? I'm unsure if he used new old stock silk plush, or if this was some kind of fur. Here it is paired with my work in progress Edwardian morning coat.
I already did. I found that a circa 1980s velvet clothes brush also works well for that final polish. If only I could get it to stay as shiny as it looks when wet.
If I used a tiny bit of Vaseline, all I'd have is a greasy hat. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEtFEMMyA5l/?igsh=NHJhcXEzZWZwdXps
Thank you for the help! God knows I can't afford that. I did luck out and found an older Christy's melusine top hat a few weeks ago for $90. It's a good hole filler for the moment
You don't think I know most of that? It's been impossible. Everything vintage is just too small. The few vendors who DO have what I want also know exactly what they have. Cheapest antique I've seen is $2,200 ish, and that's for a size smaller than what I need.
Although I do want to point out...
Here's my latest flea market acquisition; an art nouveau ring from before 1910. High quality rose gold filled. The stone is a later replacement, definitely glass, (looks like it's been glued in), but I'm keeping it in rather than replacing it with a garnet or white sapphire I have from another...
Since I'm never going to find an original in my size (7 5/8) for under $450 ish dollars (my absolute limit), anybody know of the best looking modern alternative that isn't insanely expensive?
Hello all!
I'm an intermediate tailor, recreating and Edwardian cutaway suit. What they would considered semi-formal day wear. Not quite a morning coat, but not quite a sack coat. Business frock coat, English walking frock. Etc etc..
I have an Oxford grey twill in a rough texture at my...
Where in this godforsaken world can I find a good black plush top hat, in 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 for less than $300? New, repro , vintage. I don't care so long as it's not wool. Or am I just delusional?
I wanted to show my summer outfit from the Manhattan Vintage Show the other day as technically my soon-to-be suit is just the jacket worn as a sport coat at the moment. I made the jacket using drafting manuals from 1916-19, and the detachable collar, necktie and cuffs. I found a pre tied collar...
Dusting off this old thread to show my summer outfit from the Manhattan Vintage Show the other day. I made the jacket using drafting manuals from 1916-19, and the detachable collar, necktie and cuffs. I found a pre tied collar stud tie that was in abysmal shape and picked it apart for the...

I'm in the process of making myself a simple 1910s linen summer suit, and I'm not sure if I'll have enough fabric left for trousers. I can't get any more of this fabric, and I don't have a pattern for plus fours or jodhpurs (nor would they be flattering on me).
What I'm looking for is visual...
For sale: early 20th century Borsalino. US size 7 (despite the label pointing to a European size 7 which is a 7 1/8 I think, it measured at a US 7). Asking $65+ shipping.
I will once I see if it fits! If it doesn't, there's no point in keeping it....I'll know in a month at the latest. Thank you for the help, by the way. You have a fantastic collection and I'm grateful you could share your knowledge
I took a risk at $24 on what's either a 7 US or a 7 Punti early 20th century Borsalino. It appears to be Punti. Out of Romania, and it appears to have been sold there originally, too.
