Pre-sale advice - disclose defect or have it repaired?

A quick follow-up... I heard back from Wolverine and they state that their boots are not designed to have this defect repaired. Their opinion is that emerging nail heads are part of the expected wear for their boots. They suggested buying a third-party insole to cover the nail heads. I have...

Pre-sale advice - disclose defect or have it repaired?

That sounds like a good plan. I'll include a clear photo of each heel area in good light. The thin leather lining is only stuck down in its centre by some double-sided tape so I may be able to get at some of the worst offenders and punch them. I don't want to do it through the leather as it...

Pre-sale advice - disclose defect or have it repaired?

I need some advice about people's expectations when buying a second-hand item where there is a defect that will be readily apparent. My personal philosophy is always, always disclose the issue. I never want to try to hide something from a buyer. The specific situation is that I have a very...

Ask a question, get an answer

If you look on a site such as Panama Bob's, you can find picture examples of hats made in a Brisa weave. I understand that Brisa is a Cuenca weave which is generally looser and quicker to make than Cuenca Llano weave which is the Cuenca equivalent to the Montecristi but does not seem to go as...

    Panama Hat Thread

I guess if what you have is a rice bag, then you use a rice bag - nice tip on heating it like a neckpad in the microwave though. As it happens I have ordered a wooden brim and crown block plus matching tipper (made in resin) from a UK millinery supplier. It is more expensive than the Cuenca was...

    Panama Hat Thread

Another quick question about re-blocking my PB Cuenca Fino Brisa... I will be ordering a hat block from a local maker but how essential is the "tipper" or "creaser" which matches the top of the block and is used to push the crown down into the block while it is still soft from the steam? I was...

Thanks for the link to that site - some interesting background on Panamas and the retail hype there. I am just glad this is my gardening hat - it looks odd now but at least it is clean.

The brim is actually well behaved... it is the sides and top I am having an issue with. Thanks for the link though.

    Panama Hat Thread

I have a care question to do with reshaping a Panama that has been user-cleaned. I have just washed my gardening Panama (PB Cuenca Fino Brisa bashed to Rio Plata style) with the standard black cloth sweatband that was looking rather grubby after last season in the sun and garden and I have...

    Panama Hat Thread

Ballpoint inks are very fugitive, some notoriously so, but a lot of the better fountain pen inks are more persistent when in contact with vegetable fibres (an anti-forgery measure, especially used in black inks) - I suspect this is why so much of the Mont Blanc ink remains on WineGuy's gorgeous...

Advice needed on cleaning soiled leather jacket

Thanks for the advice, folks. I managed to find the old thread about washing jackets and decided to just give it a go and see. I checked all pockets (found the obligatory forgotten tissue), turned it inside out and zipped it up and put it in my front-loader on the Woollens cycle at 20 degrees...

Advice needed on cleaning soiled leather jacket

I have been asked to clean a cheap leather jacket for a friend and I need a bit of advice on how to approach the task... The jacket is a very cheap light-weight one made in Pakistan about twenty-odd years ago for the equivalent in todays money of £90. I suspect it is sheep/lamb leather, is...

My S. Willis horsebutt wallet after 4 months of everyday wear

A lovely wallet. I saw your original post about it when it was new and I wondered... how much are you using the coin pocket on it? I know Hankh showed his similar wallet on your original post but he has a separate coin purse.

    Cologne and perfume

I like my Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet - it has a lovely lime/juniper "G&T" smell. My wife has settled on the Penhaligons English Fern which smells like a walk in an English woodland - woody and green.

    Vintage Cologne

You may have luck with the Penhaligons range - some of those are definitely vintage inspired like Blenheim Bouquet from 1902. They have both US and Euro stores and will send you testers.
