What does the number of X's on a hat signify? I've always thought it represented the amount of beaver fur blended in. I've seen Stetson hats at 20x, even 200x. Can someone clear this up?

It's a Dobbs Twenty circa 1950's I believe. Lining says Dobbs Fifth Avenue New York. It has a Guild Edge stamp, Hughes Hatcher Suffrin Detroit and GWG stamped on the inside of the sweatband. I don't know what GWG stands for. What more would you like to know about it?
