In my initial post I was torn between a D1, A2 or cafe racer. I am now deep in the A2 rabbit hole.
I have found one on Ebay but just wanted some advice prior to proceeding.
1. It's steer hide. How does this compare to horse or goat? Any red...

I have seen a cracking condition A2 on ebay but it is steer and not horse. Guessing that is a no go?
Yeah, I think trying on is definitely the way to go. Any experience with the actual leather. I found what appeared to be a great price Aero A2 but it appears to be steer hide on closer inspection. I believe this is not as good as horse.
