Streets of SanFrancisco, Schott, etc.
before moving the conversation off the streets of sanfran, i should relate what a friend from the clothing business and sanfran (a lady mind you, who nevertheless knew whereof she spoke) chided me for wearing my milspec a-2s in the regular vs. long size...i...
is their credibility Schott?
thank you fletch...i guess when you come to appreciate the real thing, it's hard, for me anyway, to understand why a maker with such credibility in workmanship would not even bother to cover that market...i was pretty disgusted with all the Schotts i've seen, being...
was wondering why Schott, clearly a high quality and well-known military jacket maker, insists on making such a NON-military spec A-2?
i thought their pseudo A-2 with the side-slit handwarmer pockets so prominent, and the snaps at the front bottom, and on the front top instead of a throat...
spiewak and sons...here's one to look at
i found a spiewak and sons, probably 70s-90s military spec reissue. nice pix:
http://casablancawatch.com/watches/under500view.asp?wid=230
seems they were indeed u.s. world war 2 contractors, but do not seem to make a-2s anymore as i googled them...
uswings sizing and quality
i have mixed feelings on uswings, but the most important part of that mix is excellent in the feeling dept...
as others have mentioned, it depends what jackets you get...i think uswings gets stigmatized as a generic/low authenticity jacket maker because of the wide...
uswings feedback
i've had uswings, but i'd always go milspec with them...i did with my g-1...has side warmer pockets but that is milspec to the us coastguard (tho not the navy)...so i do have the perforated coastguard name on the inner windflap...totally excellent jacket which has held up like...
OLD avirex iS authentic
had to comment on your avirex...despite claims, this baby is authentic...albeit those who say it isn't are likely referring to ww2 authenticity...which is correct, this is not authentic to ww2 a-2s...
however, this is in fact one of the avirex jackets made to milspec...
going reaL...
the talk is interesting about a-2 sizing, whether the 'tall' and 'long' that we purchase to fit ourselves has relevance to the original a-2, and why that original in fact existed...
as mentioned by paddy i think, the a-2 is now a fashion statement, but a statement is not bad...
my Shrink2Fit results
well, i did it...maybe the results will help people to guage their own experiments:
i really liked my cockpitusa current issue a-2, but i had got a 44L not realizing these jackets are about 25 1/2" long from bottom collar to bottom jacket in the REGULAR...about an inch...
A-2 mystiQue? they're all different, even at the same size?
thanks for the replies...i guess one of the things i'm finding out about a-2s is that each one is different in sizing, even from the same eras but different manufacturers...here is what i've found:
uswings actual issue g-1 (i know...
recently educating myself on a-2s in a rather wallet-painful way of purchasing them and then learning what does and doesn't work...i've been a little less than happy with how a 'tall' sized a-2 looks in some brands...
this happened with the current cockpitusa a-2, i got a 44tall (does not...
HeavyHorse?
hi, i'll be able to answer you about horse vs. goat when i get my gibson and barnes (flightsuits.com) horse in about another week, however the literature on the sites, from what my ADD brain can remember, is that horsehide is in the same league as goat...
i cAn say that the...
gonna take a bath
thanks...putting such a high end jacket in the drink, and having it come out like you wanted, and clearly in such nice condition, has made me reconsider my weenie-ness...i may be getting the washer ready...
very much appreciated
johnnyjohnny
going to the shrink
thank you so much for that info...i just got my cockpit current issue a-2 and got a 44 long when i think i just should have gotten the regular...i love it otherwise, so between dunking it in the hot wash but not turning the machine on, and wetting it down as you have done, i...
GOT this suggestion...dunk your A-2 in the washer...opinions?
in another thread i received this information about using water to shrink an A-2...following the suggestion is my reply...clearly i'm a bit incredulous, but would like to know if others think this is safe:
would like to hear...
HoLY FLooDWATeR PaNTS BaTMAN...are you SuRE?!?
thanks for the info, and i must admit to being tooo squeemish to ever try this.
but i don't know i'll come around to sticking my leather jacket in hot water in the washer, and then into the dryer...sounds more like something they might do to...
a question for those of knowledge on the leather in A-2s, specifically i just got a cockpitusa current issue A-2
at 6'1" and 185 i got a 44 long...46 long fits right-on in the military cuts, though a 46 will be fine too...
the cockpitusa came, rather nice, but the leather looked drapey...
"...aaaaaaand Loving iT!"
a quote from the old tv show 'get smart'...and i aM loving the thread that i feel happy to have started...
too much to write about without putting many to sleep, but a quote by the philosophical atticus really hit home:
hit home in that with the A-2s, i really...
