Past Lives and Einstein's Theory of Spooky Science at a Distance...

Here is my issue with Buddhism... I'm hip to the first half, but then we run into trouble. And you'll get my big fluffy pillow when you pry it from my cold, dead ***.

    Smokers and Hat Wearers

I can think of a lot of policies I'd like to implement and tell people to "get over it". I'm not sure I'd like a country that would allow that to happen though.

    Smokers and Hat Wearers

They don't monitor my driving, but then there is not the same link between driving habits and long-term health care costs. Given that the company pays an average of about $36,000/year/employee in health insurance, they see it as a relevant piece of their business. And if you have a hard time...

    Smokers and Hat Wearers

My company has recently introduced a smoking surcharge as well, but it's only $25/month. I can handle that. The rule is, if you've had at least one puff in the last 24 months, you're a "smoker". There's not testing for it, they're simply relying on our honor, at least for now. But if you're...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

A "suck egg" or "egg sucking" mule/dog/scoundrel/varmint/what have you is another Southern expression referring to someone who can't be trusted, as in they'll sneak up and steal your eggs right out from under you. So "I'll be a suck egg mule" basically means "you won't believe this, but..."

Well, we are traveling through space-time. One doesn't exist without the other.

Past Lives and Einstein's Theory of Spooky Science at a Distance...

As long as we're talking sci-fi and time travel, I liked the explanation from Quantum Leap. We think of time like a string, and we are on it, moving from one end to the other. We also think of the string as stretch out straight. But why? What if the string were in a ball, with all points...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Being on an airplane tends to bring out the worst in people, be it fashion, or anything else.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

The irony being that they will tell you they dress like a bum to show the world they're not a slave to expectations and the Boys.

    School and college sports

I buy generic peanuts, out of the bulk bin at the supermarket. They're about half the price of the jarred kind. I always have some on hand, along with licorice jelly beans. Both of them are perfectly acceptable snacks in my little world.

    School and college sports

Cheerios have long been my favorite cereal. I eat them dry as a snack most of the time now. I invariably get the "what are you, an infant?" line.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

"Rhubarb" is another term for a fierce fight, though not necessarily involving a mob. Word is, the term was first used to describe a fight at a bar in Brooklyn amongst Dodger and Giants fans.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I LOVED doing that when I was single. I'd look a a toy for my nephew and say.. "Nah...too quiet". Drove my sister nuts, which was entirely the point.

Mrs. Hawk would add "no fun". The joy of the cards, decorating and gift giving is in the process, not the product.

Hats of the Urban Cowboy / Mickey Gilley Era

It was long rumored that Gilley himself set the fire (or it was done at his request), but ultimately they convicted a 16-year old firebug, who had previously set his junior high school ablaze.

Hats of the Urban Cowboy / Mickey Gilley Era

Somewhere I have a picture or two of me on the mechanical bull. My parents still live a stone's throw from where the old Gilley's once stood (it closed in 1989 and burned down a year later). Pasadena, Texas in the late 70s early 80s was a culture unto itself.

A Meerschaum Issue - Any Advice?

Is the meerschaum insert block or pressed? If it's the latter, which is quite common for calabash inserts, particularly on less expensive pipes, then four bowls right off the bat without complete cooling between was probably not a great idea. The good news is, it's relatively easy and...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Having spent time working in Kuwait, I can confirm that there is a whole generation of working people for whom the Gulf War is ancient history. They have "Discover America Week" there, but many have no understanding of why.
