    Moonshine making during WW2?

By coincidence, I was at the Tennessee Military Collectors Association show a couple of years and ago and the author of the TN Maneuvers book was there selling books. I was talking to him and an old guy walked up and started looking at the book. There is a picture in there of the 101st...

    Moonshine making during WW2?

"In the Presence of Soldiers" is a great book about the Tennessee Maneuvers. They didn't extend as far to the East as the Appalachians, but closer than most other such wartime activities. They did cover the eastern half of Middle Tennessee. I know the author and can put you in touch if you...

Can't name the film, but based just on looks, that may be a young Lou Costello.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I remember Bugs Bunny using the term. There is some sort of commotion going on outside his rabbit-hole so he comes out and asks, "What's all the hubbub, bub?"

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I use Lizzie's throw-away method at my mother's house. It's adjacent to a big woods where reside raccoons, deer, possums, etc. (Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY!). Any edible food leftovers are pitched towards the woods and they never last overnight.

    Moonshine making during WW2?

It's a particular interest of mine, and I *partially* agree. I think that overall a lot more print has been devoted to WWII battles, generals, weaponry, etc., but I have been able to find quite a few books and articles about the Home Front by diligently visiting used book stores and antique...

What was the last TV show you watched?

Good luck on "Justified"... Olyphant's acting may be the least of your worries. I tried to watch it and made it through the third episode before giving it up. They had so many errors concerning firearms usage and nomenclature that I couldn't buy the notion that these people are supposed to be...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

It's not just the Bible, it's the classics in general. I recently read a book about Judge Parker, the famous "Hanging Judge" from Ft. Smith, Arkansas. It related an incident in which, after the Judge sentenced a bank-robber and murderer to hang, the criminal then cursed out the Judge using a...

    What happened to small towns?

A lot... which is exactly the problem, because I have to pay taxes based out of what I make, not from some highly-inflated "resale value", which has been driven up by mostly by out-of-State "developers"/speculators. To repeat, my salary has definitely not gone up by 50%, then 40%, then another...

    The Decaying Evolution of Education...

I could (and probably should) look this up myself, but is the "One L" book the ancestor of the movie "The Paper Chase"? Watching that movie cured me of any inclinations I had toward law school. (Not that I had many...) Engineering grad school is/was so much more pleasant. No back-stabbing and...

    What happened to small towns?

As an "old-fogey" who isn't retired, in large part because of our exorbitant property taxes, there is another side to the story. I bought my house back when my neighborhood was just an ordinary neighborhood with moderate house/property prices. Then it became "hot" and then "red-hot" due to...

    Show us your Guns!

As someone who's line of work is higher education I was following the discussion you referred to very closely (and participated a bit). I don't remember anything from anyone that was out of line. Don't quit - especially if you have been falsely accused.

    1940's England

There are a lot of British-made WWII movies made from mid-war through the '50's that my group of war-movie fans call "How We Won the War" movies. These are mostly black and white movies that cover various aspects of the better events of WWII, from the British perspective. A partial list, in no...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Someone once said, "If you ever read a news report about an event that you were directly involved in, you'll never believe another news report again."

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Reminds me of George Carlin's news-reporter bit: "There were three more senseless killings in the city last night. However, there were two other perfectly reasonable ones."

    The Decaying Evolution of Education...

There is more to this notion that just because Generation B can't pass a test from Generation A, therefore something has gone wrong with either the people or the school system. With respect especially to science and technology, things change - often radically, and what is relevant to Generation...

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

Both Hatcher's and Mythbuster's results fit aerodynamic theory (as you'd expect). A bullet has a relatively high drag coefficient after it turns sideways or begins to tumble, and not that much weight, so it's terminal velocity (and lethality) is not much as long as things are kept vertical...

    What Happened....

It's all a matter of taste, so no offense is intended, but to me raw fish is what you eat after you have escaped from a POW camp and are staggering through the jungle starving to death and manage to grab a fish out of a mud-puddle. Other than that, all food should be thoroughly cooked. And also...
