So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This is the way it is here in Texas...and everywhere else I've ever lived too. It's not an easement. Your property line ends 10 feet or so from the sidewalk. Nonetheless, the homeowner is responsible for the upkeep all the way to the roadway, and people tend to think "if I mow it, it's mine".

When was the last time someone was called a "bird dog" or accused of "bird-dogging"?

For the best results with a green egg, you should use charcoal as your main heat source and wood chips or chunks for smoke/flavor. I wouldn't try to use all wood, as it wouldn't burn well in the egg. Wood has too much moisture and other things to burn very efficiently in the closed environment...

    Things that make you smile

We only get hummingbirds passing through on migration, in the spring and the fall. But a few years back, I built an owl house for my wife and hung it in a tree in the back yard. For a couple of years, it just hung there...nothing. Then one night, she runs inside excitedly..."there's something...

One of the best, most authentic Mexican restaurants I ever visited was in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Yep..."Mayberry". You never know...

We Southern cavefolk like our cookies like we like our iced tea...sweet. We can tolerate spicy, gingerbread type cookies. Just don't ask us to put gravy on our French fries.

I love pepper. I have a pepper thing. Real pepper that is, pepper that come directly from a grinder. I cannot abide the pre-ground dust you find in a shaker, either at home or in restaurants. You might as well be using sand. I don't think that makes me a food snob though.

    The Decaying Evolution of Education...

This was one of the things I loved about being an undergraduate in geology. Small classes (never had an upper level class with more than four students) and weeks together with your professors in the field working during the day, drinking beer by the campfire at night, was the norm. Lots of...

The End of the Era ...

It's not that "today's engineers" somehow don't have the smarts to figure out what the engineer of yesterday knew. Technologies have changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed. Making complex machinery such as a lunar landing module work is much more complex than understanding a blueprint...

Growing up in Florida the theory was you'd better learn to swim by the time you learned to walk. Not for recreational competition, but because as soon as you were mobile you were going to find water. I don't remember not being able to swim.

    The Decaying Evolution of Education...

Are you somehow obligated to follow what you present in the syllabus? Perhaps only on the attendance requirement? When I was in school back in the day, a professor with a reputation of following the syllabus had a reputation of one you wanted to avoid. Maybe things change.

There's something to be said in that vein of "brain power" skill as well. When I worked in the refinery a boss once told me "work stress is knowing that if you make a mistake today, a thousand people will die."

I raised rabbits as a kid. Didn't notice any rats around, but I'm sure there were. I had a rabbit a time or two as an adult, but kept them in the house. They can be litter box trained, so it's not a big deal.

The "town" I live in now (hometown of noted hat lover Lyle Lovett) was founded by German immigrants, and their presence is still all over the place. All of the local schools and streets have German names. The Germans also settled much of central Texas and the German influence is still very...
