These are not cookie-cutter caps.
What I wanted was a cap with a lot of material and the depth to encompass a rather large noggin. This allows the individual wearer to shape his/her cap as suits their fancy. That is exactly what I received.
These hats are sewn by people working from their...
Torpedo, I like that grey herringbone.
I received my black, extra-full cut from the HatPeople today. With the adjustment made in the elastic, this one is just about perfect and the extra-full cut is just what I wanted.
This hat arrived today and it is a terrific felt. It does need a good cleaning. It is actually a size 8 LO with a mode edge. It'll be going off to Jimmy Pierce for a clean, resize and reblock to a 7 5/8 open crown.
Rick, Dumbjaw, and Woodflutter, those are some nice lids, gentlemen...
Sovereign is a felt quality designation that Stetson has used for decades. Stetson also made hats that are very similar/almost identical to an OR but did not have the OR designation. It appears that you have a very nice example of one of these hats.
While I agree with bolthead that a tall, no taper crown and a wider (2 5/8") brim would look very good on you, The Traveller does look good.
As to Silverbelly, I believe the contrast with your skin tone would look good as well. Paired with mid to light tone clothing, Silverbelly could be an...
It's an [open] crown question.
Like any other rule of thumb/head, the crown-never-touching-the-top-of-the-head guideline may be one that is followed as often in the breach as in the observance. Else the oilskin/fishskin/plastic shield twixt the head and the crown of the liner would prove...
Keep 'em comin'!
The whole ensemble looks terrific, Alan.
Here's a shout out to the DMan and two swell lids.
Douglas, what can I say about that Stratoliner? :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
Gentlemen, It's another great day for hats. You all look super!
My lucky day.
I thought it would go a lot higher. [huh]
Depending on my haircut, sometimes I can wear a 7 1/2. However, with vintage hats, I usually stretch them over a block or use a hat jack. If that doesn't work, I take them to Jimmy Pierce.
The mode edge did it for me.
I was the winner on the 7 1/2 3X Stetson. From the seller's listing:
"3x beaver qualityStetson Fedora hat Size 7 1/2 .
Has a Grograin Ribbing hat band , with an ecru satin lineing. Inside band it says 3x beaver quality Stetson John B Stetson Co. mode edge , The...
The opening scene with the two killers in the diner in The Killers (1946) is not only one of my favorite scenes in film but those two guys wear their fedoras like they were born in them.

Why do you think we buy open-crown hats?
Many a C-crown has been shaped by hand. It does not have to be blocked by a factory to be a C-crown. A C-crown is a C-crown no matter how the crease was made.
Many afficianados prefer to crease their hats by hand. Bogart was probably one of these...
That hat was most likely made as a flat-crown hat by Stetson. The felt quality (Royal De Luxe), wide ribbon with backbow, flat crown, and relatively narrow brim, are reminiscent of the Stetson Continental from the 50's. This appears to be a style called the Bimbo, which I've not seen before...
