I defer to your experience, but i’m not sure I’m convinced that starting with the same hat body will yield identical hats.

That’s the trouble with sand, silver belly, etc. you can’t handle them with grubby paws, unless it is a working hat.
Since I haven’t worked in more than 30 years, I have to keep my hat reasonably clean.
Sometimes I wish for a bit more “character” but for the most part I’m happy with a clean hat.
I don’t want to be seen as shaking my finger at people, but if you are going to fool with naphtha, just be sure you know what you are dealing with.

Don’t feel bad, I only own five (5) “real” hats, which puts me far, far away from even the average here.
I will also wear the same hat for weeks at a time, rather than several in a day.
But I continue to hover on the periphery of this hat world.
