    Well Fitted - 1940

"Greetings.." I wonder if he got one soon after. He probably had about a year at most of civilian life to enjoy. Unless he was 4-F. Many guys, my father included, joined in early '41 before we were at war.

Of Sheep-Dip, Rot-Gut, and Furniture Polish. The worst of the worst.

Southern discomfort Welcome to the Lounge, JimWagner. I can recall liking it when I was younger, I think because it was something we underage drinkers could get our hands on at the drive-through. I imagine many of us have 'moved on' now. I see it as an ingredient in some cocktails that don't...

    To actually EXPERIENCE the era....

Redux I get the point, but I think driving or riding in a vintage car is a powerful time travel experience, (one I seldom enjoy). You compare everything about it to the modern and imagine a lot about the world contemporary with the car. Short of participating in an 'authentics' living history...

    Well Fitted - 1940

A fit fit Exactly. Definitely 1940. This is not the more comfortably drapey, attractive Bold Look, I think of as late '40's. Imagine seeing this guy today and not thinking 'Hey, that guy's outgrown that suit'.

memories Michaelson: Thanks for that drive down memory lane. Ours was a '54 Buick Roadmaster. What a boat. Thanks for the beautifully told story. Can you smell gasoline from the carburator when you drive?

Tipple topple Can anyone compare it with Zima, which met its just fate? That would require someone to admit to sampling both. On second thought, that might be too embarassing an admission. We'll never know.

Akubra Fed IV or Christy's Adventurer, whats better?

Fed IV fever I have just recently gotten four Fed IV's and love them. I am tempted to wear them to bed but Mrs. is not keen on that. Wonderful hats and fun to bash. They are a real taste of the 30's and 40's.

    Pearl Harbor Day movies

Someone must remember Pearl Harbor Day on this site. Just a 'yes' or 'no' will do. My dad was a wounded WW2 Army vet and this stuff means something to me. I have met two veterens who were there at Pearl on 'the day'. Unforgettable chats. One was an officer on the USS Helena who manned an...

    Pearl Harbor Day movies

Anyone going to watch 'Tora, Tora, Tora" this weekend or tomorrow? (Notice I didn't reference the middling "Pearl Harbor' effort of Mr. Affleck) Or, are these movies politically inconvenient, never mind their artistic merits or lack thereof? By the way, I still like 'The Winds of War' and...

Hercule Poirot: well dressed gentleman or overdressed dandy?

Poirot At least Captain Hastings was generally well dressed and drove a killer car-Blower Bentley, if I recall.

Hercule Poirot: well dressed gentleman or overdressed dandy?

Couldn't say it better I missed this my first read-through. It describes how I also feel about the series, perfectly. Wonderful sets, props, manners and clothes, an evocation of a time and place but I wouldn't really care to bend an arm with him.
