Thanks for the advice. Why is the vegetable tanning important? And why not calfskin?
(I have so many questions...)
I have lots of brim reed (plastic) that appears to be the same stuff and more brim wire than I can use in my lifetime. But how about unreeded sweatbands? Is that a possibility...
Thank you John, I'll have a look. You're right, at that price and stamped it hardly seems worth the effort. Having said that, I have a huge bag full of calfskin off cuts so I'm having a go this afternoon. Leather hat bands might be a better use for it, cheers.
Thanks for that, carranty, those were my thoughts. I know plenty of chaps who will test out my hat-making skills, I've already started bartering. I'm hoping that my block maker will make my next block or two in exchange for a hat. I have done ribbon replacements etc on men's hats in the past and...
Thanks for the advice. It's always good to have a reality check and that does all sound overwhelming. My ladies hats are bespoke so they are made to measure but I don't have the mountain of hat blocks you describe. On the plus side I do have a local chap who makes blocks for me which should save...
Loved your first fedora, amazing work for the first piece. I am a milliner from Wales, UK. I currently make ladies hats but I am very keen to do more men's hats and I am enjoying the Fedora Lounge immensely. The techniques you all describe are quite different in many ways to those I use. I don't...
Thanks carranty, I am beginning to get that impression. I have so much to learn, making the transition from milliner to hatter. I thought I would already have a lot of the equipment and skills but having spent some time on the forum I feel like a complete beginner again. I wonder if there is...
I make my own. Currently I make ladies occasion hats at my shop and studio in West Wales. I've made a few gent's hats recently and I've got the bug! I have a lot to learn but my plan is to spend the next year building up my hatting equipment and my expertise and running down the wedding hat side...
Thanks for that. And presumably you block the crown first, turn it upside down through the hole and pull the felt over the flange. Does it have a string groove or would you use pins?
Hello, I'm new and very excited to be here. As a milliner hoping to evolve into a hatter I have MANY questions. To begin....
Is a flange what I (a Welsh milliner) might call a brim block?
