When I studied German in high school, I never thought about it, I just did it, it came easily to me. When I try to read German now, I am always trying to understand the grammar, and end up getting nowhere.
The main obstacle to English speakers is German grammar, which is modeled on Latin. With four cases, three genders and plural, something as simple as "the" becomes quite complicated. Pronunciation, on the other hand, is simple compared to the idiosyncrasies of English.
I just set the cruise control for the speed limit and not worry about it. This is especiallly useful where the speed limit is 25 mph, as I find it harder to regulate lower speeds in mosst cars.
It is allowable only because it is meaningless, they call it "cerimonial deism". It may be meaningless to you and I, but there are some who take it way too seriously, and will use it as evidence of their particular religion as having some official status in the US.
I can do without it.

The 1960s were the era of anti establishment youth culture. Eventually, the establisment took on the styles of the anti establishment and marketed them to mainstream society. This was in my opinion the real break with traditional style.
When I was in college, I worked summers doing rotating shits. It took all week to get used to the shift, and then next week you had to get up 8 hours earlier. The first day of midnight shift was absolute misery. It felt like jet lag the entire summer, I don't miss it at all.
