How do you drink your whiskey?

I prefer whiskey (Scothc, Irish, American, etc) with ice, 2-3 cubes. 2 cubes for American whiskey, 3 for scotch. If I have my druthers, I take the ice on the side so I can sip the whiskey straight for a bit. Then I ice it down and let some of the ice melt to get the other flavors.

    The most frightening motion pictures?

Oh yes, this as well. I wasn't "scared", but thoroughly impressed. Cormac McCarthy is one of the greatest modern authors alive, and this story is so engrossing, so desperate that when I saw it play out over the screen, I broke down in tears at the end. Very awful, very sad. If you haven't...

    Unpopular music opinions

I agree in the sense that every band/musician performs and records differently. Some bands can pull off a consistent live performance that's just as good, or better, than a recorded one. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and Rage Against the Machine could play an entire set "live" in the studio...

    Unpopular music opinions

VitaminG, from my experience in a recording studio, your description is quite accurate. The concept of recording and performing are simply two different things. Recording, at least in the modern sense, is about capturing the very best possible take within the limited time in-studio. Although...

    The most frightening motion pictures?

I have to agree with you folks on the idea that movies were scarier when we were children. I know it sounds obvious, but films were literally magical to me when I was younger. Even into my teens, I was able to really get enveloped in a story. I remember watching The Exorcist as a child, quite...

    Any writers?

That's an interesting concept: a collective of writers-turned-publishers working together through some kind of socialist principle. [huh] I don't see why it couldn't be done, although I would imagine it would be pretty trying.

    Any writers?

Precisely. If anyone takes a bus, or waits in line at the Dept. of Transportation, or the doctor's office, etc. they could very easily bring a book to pass the time. But because reading tends to be an obligation (particularly because people can't find any personal bearing in the material), they...

    Any writers?

martinsantos, I do remember small bookstores with a single owner. There was one in particular store in Des Moines that was packed away off the street next door to a vacuum sales shop. You walked into this 10x20 room where books were stacked from floor to ceiling, no labels, no prices, no...

    Any writers?

I went to a "writer's panel" of sorts up in Ames at Iowa State University last Saturday afternoon. The discussion panel consisted of a New York literary agent, a literary magazine publisher, a small-press book publisher and a twice published author. We crammed ourselves elbow-to-elbow in a dusty...

    "Can streetcars save America's cities?" ~ cnn.com

There has been considerable discussion regarding street cars making a comeback in Des Moines, IA. At one time, I believe we were the 3rd city in the nation to have an extensive light rail system (next to Baltimore, and someone else). In any case, I don't think we'll ever see it here. Would...

    Misconceptions of World War II

Here's a misconception from the Axis side. Hitler was under the impression that America would take a cue during the annexation of Austria, and in turn annex portions of Canada for their resources. When American didn't do this, Hitler thought at the very least, America would be sympathetic to...
