Thanks friends. I asked my guy about the Eternal Brown and he said it isn't water proof. Perhaps he just meant as compared to Bulletproof. Think what I'll do is just get both and see for myself.
On the acidic nature of the iron gall inks of days of yore, I have also read that it has a...
Thanks all. On the old time ink, I'm pretty sure some of it was brown, because I've made my own out of walnut hulls and iron filings. Couple of interesting things about it besides the color is that it is waterproof when dry, and I can get a higher viscosity which makes steel dip pens and quills...
Hemingstone, I remember peacock blue from school as well. Even back then I was using a fp when all the others had ball points. I'm not your mother's age but uncomfortably close.
Ahhh. Very interesting. Those hats on the Bencraft site are very similar, but my hats have a slightly narrower band and brim widths of 2 3/4" and 2 7/8" respectively. One is brown the other silver belly.
Also, near as I can figure, mine are from the fifties. Neither has plastic in the crown...
I have two Borsalino OR clones that I have in the past referred to as "Allesandrias." However, the longer I hang around the Lounge, I am getting more and more dubious as to the correctness of that word as designating a model name. Can anyone set me straight?
Anybody know what color(s) of ink was to be found in fountain pens of the 'teens, twenties, thirties? Would the type of writing one was doing be a factor? Ie. documents, correspondence, academe? Also, any preference by the sexes?
Ta.
Feraud, those are extremely interesting photos. It would be great to know more about the time frame/context in which they were taken.
And, you are so right about looking to movies for authenticity. I am woefully ignorant about golden era style et al, but I do know something about Western...
That was an interesting point about the US probably being somewhat different than Europe vis a vis the class and cap thing. As far as I know, the cap was always the thing for sporting use (try for a high bird in a brimmed hat) over there.
Prince Charles was wearing one in a news item I saw...
Like Fletch, my take, derived from old films and photos, is that the cap was much more widely used by kids and working men. If you consider how most rural workers today have abandoned their cowboy hats for feed caps etc., it is easy to understand.
I would like more info on this though. I was...
I wear the hell out of mine and they just come back for more. As to comparing them to Akubras and the like in terms of durability, absolutely no contest.
I could fix those for you in a New York minute if I had them here, but since not, try this.
Find an old leather coat and cut a piece of leather from it to fit the back of the boot and place it in there smooth side out.
If you're handy, you can make this permanent with the use of a good...
Woweee!, Nevada, that illustration (Papa methinks?) is great. Sure would like to see it bigger, and more like it, should it become possible in future.
Ps. Ya wouldn't believe the fishing we have around these parts.
