sick and tired of new scrap appliances.

I believe this is really your main point, Noir, and you are quite correct. It is human nature to progress and create. However, the issue we're discussing isn't so much that humans are driven to destroy/erase/improve so much as people in Western society have seemingly lost the ability to...

sick and tired of new scrap appliances.

Lizzie and Tony: I'm sure you know that the current progression of society means that our kind are dying out. As the knowledge is passed down, it will be increasingly diluted to a point of non-existence, until "the golden era" and the sensibilities of that time are not but shadows playing over...

Is It Okay To Post American Indian Jewelry In This Forum?

There are places to SELL those items, if that's what you mean, but like Edward said, if it's relatively vintage you should be fine. Post some pics, let's see what you have!

How do you care for vintage wool trousers?

You might give them a good dry cleaning once a year, or less. Otherwise, just hang them up and leave some breathing room - just so long as they're not crammed into a drawer or stuffed into a plastic bag somewhere. You can spot clean with a little borax, washing soda and fels-naptha mixture...

Persona: You and Your Daily Essentials

This is all I typically carry in a day. If I'm wearing a suit, I lose the chain and D-clips and leave the knife at home. Otherwise, this is it.

Stauer watch company any good words about them?

Haha, the panel is made to look like brass - but it's some cheap pot metal "brushed" with an "antique" finish. Still, you're right, plays the old vinyls well enough and that's all I need until I can get a proper players someday. That is a great looking watch!

    Wing tip shoes

I can imagine. I've watched a few suits and a number of beautiful hats all slip through my hands at hopelessly low prices because I couldn't possibly fit into them. In fact, after this wingtip thread started a while back, I'd found a pair of old Florsheim Imperial Longwings in 10's at a local...

    Wing tip shoes

In size 14? Hardly. Vintage is great for those that can find their fit, but sizes have changed since the 1930's and 40's, and not necessarily in the waist. While some Loungers cry about squeezing into a 40R with their 42L frame, I'm on the sidelines in a 50L and little chance in finding NOS...

    Formal Wear Primer

I think you're right. This thread has, itself, become a forum. Granted, there's no way to split out what has already been written into seperate threads, but I think it would be much more effective to have a separate forum titled "Occassions" or "Dressing for Events" with individual threads...

    Wing tip shoes

Just a note for anyone interested... I've also been looking for some decent black wingtips lately. I'd like a once-in-a-while pair without paying Allen Edmonds/Aldens prices. Seems, I'm out of luck. Johnston & Murphy doesn't seem to have any models of wingtips in stores, but they have a...

Stauer watch company any good words about them?

Precisely. Same thing with the "Spirit of St. Louis" turntable pictured below. Hey - I have one, the sound quality is sub-par but it plays all my old 33's and 45's. Although I won mine in a raffle, you can buy yours straight from the ads of these same magazines. Oh, but just try getting a new...

Mens Dress: The Look of Nonchalance

Forgive me, but I think we're comparing apples to oranges in that this advice is probably best suited for the gentleman who is not used to dressing well. If you dress well regularly, you will have little need for this advice because confidence will bring this effect naturally.

Did men stay at home longer in the Golden Era?

My grandmother lived in the dormitories of her college for nursing when she met my grandfather at age 24. He was 29 and had moved to Des Moines from a farm in Casey, IA looking for work after the war. He was staying with family friends in an upstairs room of their home. In fact, he's mentioned...

Stauer watch company any good words about them?

I'd have to agree with Valentine. These watches are often advertised in the creases of a number of magazines, including Archeology and National Geographic. It's the kind of thing run next to an advert for "Amazing Sapphire Haul Found In The Duke's Crates! They Could Be Yours!". I...

20th Century Popular Culture - A fascinating article on the subject

I'm not sure about this article either. It's give and take. The author doesn't really make any propositions but uses subtle language cues to imply writers like Huxley, etc. were somehow elitists. Certainly, some of the ideas espoused by those authors were strange at best, and perhaps even...

    The French Cuff Connection

In case anyone is interested, JCPenny's was running a sale for a French cuff shirt 100% cotton with contrasting cuffs and collar for $22. It was pretty thin material but might work well for summer wear. It's their "Signature Executive" series by Stafford. Besides a few Claiborne shirts, it was...

    Summer Suits Advice/Opinion

Chasseur, I feel like a pig but... I just passed up a 44R Palm Beach suit at goodwill for $5. I promise I will go back and see if it's there. :eusa_doh: (I wear a much bigger size and thought, "Who would want this?" Oh lord, sometimes I make myself face palm.)
