    Was Your Hometown Retro?

Ah nice, I never knew either of those! Fun random facts to tuck away in my mind. :)

    1930's, 1940's Cosmopolitan Magazines

Great ads, I'd love to see more. Old weight gain ads are the best - I've been reading some old movie magazines from the 1930s and the first time I saw a weight gain ad it made me laugh. I can't imagine ever seeing an ad like that in one of today's magazines. Sort of sad that today there...

OH MY GOODNESS... Did I hit the jackpot!

That is fantastic! Thanks for sharing - it's fun to have a peak into your grandpa's life.

    vintage music!

I love Annette Hanshaw, the Boswell Sisters, Cliff Edwards, Dick Powell, and late 20s/early 30s jazz dance bands. I've been on a Dick Powell kick since I watched the Busby Berkeley musicals he's in.

    Was Your Hometown Retro?

Unfortunately I didn't really take advantage of my home town's "retro" area until right before I went off to college and my parents moved to another state. The town I grew up in had a lot of history, but much of that history had been built over and had been overtaken by new buildings and...

Show Us Your Pedigree! The Heritage Thread.

English, Irish, French, German, Polish, Slovenian, very possibly Dutch, and 1/4 Japanese! There are so many countries I'm not really sure what traditions I've inherited from where. When I was younger I was always jealous of friends who had strong cultural traditions and local cultural events...

    Old fashioned names new again....

As far as old names go I like Adelaide and any variants - like Adele, Adeline. Norma and Ruby are also nice (but mostly because I think Norma Shearer and Ruby Keeler are fantastic). One of my all time favorite names is Sophia. I think it sounds glamourous without being gaudy. Carolina is...

Your Favorite Pastime As a Child...

I liked to play dress up, choreograph dances with friends, and write stories. When I was an older kid I used to film little movies with friends, often mysteries with spies. For awhile I thought I was going to major in film studies, but I ended up a history major. Film's not far off though...

    Ukulele Ike

Cliff Edwards is great! I just started listening to him awhile ago when I stumbled on this site: http://great-song-stylists-uk.com/Cliffedwards/Cliffedwards.htm There are quite a few songs of his posted to listen to.

    Naff today...

That is so true! I work at a library processing older books for storage so I've seen hundreds of books from a variety of periods. I've encountered books from 1769 to the late 1980s and the ones from the late 70s/80s are the most boring ugly books. It's almost a lack of style.

Raising Children--Retro in a Modern World

As I don't have any kids I don't have any experienced parenting advice, but I have seen the ways my friends' parents have raised them and how it's affected them. Setting many strict rules may work for some families (very limited hours with friends, watching TV, rules with food), but my friends...

What's your favorite era for fashion?

I'll have to join everyone else who said the thirties! I'm not very up on the technicalities of fashion but I do know what I like. I am in love with those great gowns with the V backs. So elegant and classy! I like the dresses with the belts too. Some aspects of the 40s I like, but I'm not...

    What is your passion?

Like a few others, history is my passion. There are so many facets to it, a little flavor of mystery, problem solving, imagination. I'm generally a fiction book kind of girl, but I love the storytelling aspect and reality of history. Paper things are my favorite - magazines and photos...

    Where do you come from???

Hi! I live in the Santa Barbara, CA area and am a college student majoring in history. I work part time at a library in the cataloging department. I haven't decided yet what I want to do after school, I just know that I really want to have a job where I can be around old stuff, maybe archives...

Your favorite toys as a kid?

Ooo, fun topic! I loved my American girl dolls, I had Molly and Samantha. Molly's time period was World War II and Samantha's was circa 1906 - I give them some credit for why I love history so much. There was always Barbie too, and Cherry Merry Muffin, and an assortment of other dolls. I...

    Features on Men

I admire intelligence above everything else. And then eyes - it doesn't matter what color they are, I just like it when they send off a message of intelligence and soulful mystery. Nice cheekbones don't hurt either. :)

    Five that are Seriously Overrated...

The Third Man - I don't really understand the big praise for Orson Welles. Of course I haven't seen many of his movies (like Citizen Kane) so I shouldn't really be making a judgement, but from what I've read and watched I think he's over hyped. Casablanca - I love this film, I love Humphrey...

An odd question about recreationist subcultures

I'm really glad you asked this question because I was just thinking about it the other day! Unfortunately I don't have an answer since I'm curious about the same thing. Hmm, maybe a google search will turn up something.
