Yeah, the price on Borsalinos is pretty off-putting. I'd really love to have Art Fawcett build me a hat and all up the price difference is roughly US$100 which as you point out isn't all that huge.
But I'm just way not-ready to say with any assurance exactly what I'm looking for in a hat. So...
OK, here's what I'm going to try...
1) An open crown hat so I can choose a bash that assures enough room atop my big old noggin. Plus I can experiment with the unpinched look I think I will like.
2) Taupe instead of light grey for (hopefully) maximum flexibility given my clothing habits and...
Now that's what I'm talking about. Beautiful indeed. Great, clean lines and plenty of hat for a big ol' head like mine. I now have a model for what I'm looking for in a hat, thanks Gallatin.
Nice mood lighting, what color is the hat...sort of a dove grey?
I love the unpinched look of this Trilby.
How do you folks think this would look scaled up to Open Road dimensions? Imagine it with a 2-1/2" or so brim instead of 2" and a correspondingly taller crown. Could a hat that big work with a moderate center dent, no pinch and narrow ribbon...
Thanks, rrog.
While I'm on the Open Road thread...the idea of these soft open-crown hats is that you can mix-and-match whatever crease or pinch elements you like in an individualized manner, right?
Does anyone have pictures of that style of hat with a minimal "bash"? Like little or no...
Jim,
In another thread I've been debating whether a light grey, silverbelly, taupe or similar hat color would suit me with my grey beard. Then I just came across your photo illustrating that it works perfectly. Good one!
My mother has always made fun of how, as I child, I insisted that everything match. I was monochrome before monochrome was cool.
But your point is well taken. I occasionally have that problem dressing to play golf. With the nearly-white beard and my off-white Tilley hat I can't afford to do...
The more I think about the issue, the idea of lighter tones continues to have appeal. But I think given that I have a navy blue hat and find it very restrictive in matching my clothes I'm shying away from even the slightly blue-tinted steel greys or Art's blue mist, etc. The warmer side is...
Well as usual I'll be the dissenter. I think that shape works fine for you. Isn't it always a mistake to re-bash a hat before giving it a few weeks of wear to see if you like it? lol
Happy holidays!
I own a Christy's Marlborough that briefly belonged to carldelo. I'll be interested to hear his comments on how it matched up with his Chatham.
For my part, the triangle crown on the Marlborough sits too low and rides at atop the crown of my head.
Carl,
Do you know of any Stetson models that are a little taller in the crown? The one issue I have with my Christy's Marlborough (aside from navy blue not being a universal color match) is that it settles onto the crown of my noggin while the brim is still 1-1/2 fingers above my ears. I...
Well, there is a lot of ground in the middle. It's a long way from coming across as a would-be Humphrey Bogart and dressing like a wanna-be Hip-hop gangsta.
I suspect there are a lot of us who will happily settle for the middle ground...trying to dress in a way that both shows a little style...
My formerly salt-and-pepper beard is now 90% salt, if you know what I mean. And it ain't getting any darker. Makes me look older, blah, blah, blah.
Is a hat of light color considered a no-no with a grey beard?
I have a dark brown cheapie and nice, dressy navy blue hat but I really want a...
I'll vote with Mr. Moo. Nothing wrong with the new bash (although bigger dents aren't necessarily my own taste) but the original seems to fit your head more elegantly, at least in these particular pictures. It is hard to tell since the angles of the photos aren't exactly the same. Bashed either...
