Hooked up with Tom to make my first Panama, it's my Father's Day present, I should have it this weekend and I cannot wait. It was an absolute pleasure to work with him ... and that was what it was like, working with him, not buying something from him ... and here are the photos he sent me:
Adding onto this, I wonder if given the humidity of the environment I live in, I ought to even be thinking about a high-end straw hat, unless Montecristi hats are more durable along those lines than Cuenca.
Thanks, and I'm not too far away from where you used to live so I'd be dealing with the same humidity issues (air outside right now is like syrup, LOL!). I emailed Bob, FYI, because on his site it said "email is better," I'm sure he probably is busy and will get back to me whenever he has a...
I know there are a lot of Panama threads here, but my question here's a bit more pointed and aimed so I'm tossing it out separately. I did email Panama Bob with this question, FYI, but haven't heard back from him yet.
I've put the Stetson fur fedora I got for Christmas away for the summer...
Thanks for moving this to the existing thread ... search function here was acting a little balky and this thread didn't come up in Google search ... this is info I was needing, decision now is trying to decide whether I can scrounge up enough boot on my own to get a low-end Montecristi, or put...
Recommendation for Panama hat, fedora style ...
Hi, joined and posted back around Christmas to get info on fedoras, which was what "she who must be obeyed" had agreed to get me for Christmas. Got a gray Stetson Temple from Hatco and am loving it, and have made a major impression when wearing...
Couple o' responses:
1. Don't think I want to do the Earbags. They would sort of mess up the impact of the fedora IMO. :D
2. The only thing about the Scout protector ... searching the archives here (and I'm getting a better handle on doing it so I hope I won't be asking repetitive questions...
Thanks TonyB, I'll let the hole be, and not worry too much about my "ear stains." :D I'll do the brushing, other normal hat maintenance stuff, but if my ears stain the hat a bit underneath, where nobody but me really knows about it, so be it. It will just mark it as "my hat," and I definitely...
Hi, joined and posted a couple of threads earlier this month about my search for a fedora for a Christmas present. I got that present, a caribou gray Stetson Temple I purchased from the Stetson Outlet. I've been wearing the hat regularly since opening the package on Christmas morning, I love it...
Hi, just now revisiting this, wouldn't mind at all for mods to move to the "questions" sticky that I overlooked ... did a search before asking and I still haven't gotten a handle on the search function, was having trouble narrowing down multiple hits so I just cast another line, sorry for...
Am making this a new thread since my "big headed newbie" one got so long. The Stetson Temple I ordered from the HatCo outlet arrived today, tried it on before letting the Mrs. wrap it up until 12/25 ... she loved it BTW, and I'll post pictures after Christmas.
I got a 7 3/4 because after...
Thanks. As noted, if I had more experience with hats and it wasn't so close to Christmas already, I'd jump on a Federation from Australia. But I'm content that this is the best way right now to get my foot in the door with a fur hat ... I know folks push vintage, and being that my wife loves to...
I'm a newbie to hats, but I have a collection of Mitchel and Ness reproduction wool flannel baseball jerseys, like the big leaguers wore from the 1960s on back (how, I'll never know). I keep them sealed up in garment bags with cedar blocks in the bottom of the bags. The thing with the blocks...
Googled the number and called 'em on the phone. Very nice folks. I called 'em up and I told 'em I was interested in a Stratoliner, Temple, Chatham, Downs or Whippet, size 7 3/4, in Caribou, they took my number and said they'd check their stock. Got a call back in about an hour, they said they...
Actually, after the Mrs. and I remeasured my head a few more times ... I saw that one of the custom hatmakers whose site was linked here said do it at least 3 times to be absolutely sure ... I went with 7 3/4 because my head actually wasn't dead-on 24 in. and 61 cm when we pulled the tape...
UPDATE: Going with a Stetson Temple from HatCo outlet, in Caribou Gray. The Akubra is very tempting, an absolutely definite possibility for 2nd hat which I'm sure will happen at some point ... and I agree with cardelo's assessment, in that I'm leery of ordering from Australia until I actual have...
Thanks guys for the input, didn't have a chance to call HatCo yesterday, wild day at work and by the time I had a free moment they apparently had already closed. (Anybody know what hours they're open?) Barring them having something that catches my interest, however, I'm zeroing in on an Akubra...
OK, a few more things ... first off, I'm going to give the HatCo outlet a call today and see what they might have. And I've emailed the folks at Hats Direct about this but have not heard back from them. On the website it strongly indicates that their Akubra sizes are "dead on the money" and you...
Have inquired about the Federation with Hatsdirect.com, it definitely is an attractive hat.
One other question, though ... would that tall a crown (5 5/8) be a little much for me? In addition to having a huge, round head, I'm also 5-7 and stocky. For you baseball fans, think Hack Wilson, LOL...
