Epaulets were authorized for officers only during WW2. New 2nd Lts were often referred to as "shave tails" since they were said to cut material off the bottom rear of their enlisted shirt to form epaulets for the shoulders.
That wainscotting ceiling is impressive. The cost to use wood is no longer feasible. The interior wall of my detached garage are lined with wainscot also.
