I considered the Christy's and I think it might have been ideal for my needs. But while I hemmed and hawed for three weeks trying to convince myself I could make do with a flat cap instead of a fedora (unsuccessful) it got too close to my departure to order the Christy's from Hornet's.
But...
No, it didn't come with the metal thingy. I think this is basically a modern hat something like a Como that Bencraft orders with a grosgrain sweatband so it can roll up. Not necessarily part of Borsalino's special-purpose travel hat range. Or something like that, maybe besdor will correct me if...
I had asked in a couple other threads about "rollable" Borsalino hats that I could take with me on my occasional trips via airplane. After a bit of online shopping and discussion I settled on the Astuccio that I believe is a specifically Bencraft model. Here's their photo of it in Navy Blue...
Nothing about owning, carrying or using a cell phone demands that you be any more available than you choose to be. My wife carries hers 'most everywhere she goes but would never, ever answer it if it were to ring. Anyone who wants to reach her knows her work and home phone numbers (and most do...
I don't usually comment on these pictures but I must say you'll never see a hat that is a) more suited in every way to the man wearing it and b) being worn in more of a "just so" manner. Fabulous.
In particular I like the fact that the hat is just enough darker than the suit, that really...
I just hope when my new Astuccio arrives I'll be able to bring myself to actually roll it up. If it's half as nice and anything like as comfortable as my Alessandria it would be a pity to permanently crimp its style, so to speak.
I chose the "Steel Gray" color which is a scary, massive change...
Just spoke to one of the guys at Bencraft Hats and he thought for the particular hat in question (with a grosgrain sweat band) going down one size to 7-5/8 is the safest bet. Of course they'll exchange it no problem if I need my usual 7-3/4 instead.
I mentioned to him that my 7-3/4"...
I would never have thought of it but I like it.
To my mind it should be a) nice and wide and b) something with some color and shine to it, i.e. not a dark-chocolate brown or anything really dark like that.
Maybe something like Art would call "Mocha" ribbon in about 16-18 ligne or so...
I may be acquiring a second fedora, one that is a) rollable and b) as close to being a "summer" hat as practical. Since I love my (modern) Alessandria so much I'm considering one of the unlined hats that Borsalino makes with either cloth or grosgrain sweatbands.
Here's one thing I'm...
I'd wear a black jacket with tan slacks and hat, that's not what the original question had me picturing. I was imagining black suit coat, black suit pants, black shoes, white shirt, whatever tie...and a tan hat. That would seem off to me.
I don't know what the rules of this sort of thing might be but I personally would not choose that combination. Just seems kind of icky to my taste, like the hat was an afterthought and would be better left off.
Every time my wife sees me searching around semi-frantically for a clean, safe spot to put my hat (seated at a restaurant) she says something like "Why do you think anybody cares if you wear it while you eat?". She's probably right.
One good use for a wide-brimmed Fedora in some...
As summer vacation approaches (feels like summer is already here in South Carolina) I'll recall this thread from April...
I'm flying to England for a week in late June and hadn't planned on taking my everyday hat, just the Tilley hat I wear to play golf. The closer it gets to the day the more...
I've never had my taupe Alessandria cause an "Indy" reference but someone the other day did look it over and say "Howdy, cowboy" which I thought was odd. Not very Western looking to me.
I don't think people in my usual circles are tuned in at all to Raiders as a cultural touchstone. Must be...
My current-production Borsalino Alessandria is the lightest hat I've ever seen, by a long shot. I try not bang the crown around or rearrange the bash any more than necessary. Anything made of felt that light must eventually be prone to damage but it's worth it to have such a supple and...
I think in the end they did a reasonable job of "meeting in the middle" for your completely unsatisfactory purchasing experience. I would have been livid over the "free bash" and the response to your complaint about it.
I also agree on the hat liners. I suppose they could make sense if you...
I can only speak to my experience with Bencraft. They had in stock the particular size and color of Borsalino Alessandria that I wanted. I exchanged an E-mail or two with Steven (responses did typically take a couple days) then placed my order. It took them a couple days to ship and then the hat...
This dressy-looking Navy Marlborough is still available. Still just barely used. Nice comfy factory teardrop crease (unless you have a huge, tall head like mine). Perfect condition.
If knocking a couple bucks off the asking price will make a difference please feel free to offer...
