I don't mean to hijack the thread, but actually I think there were a lot of exceptions to the rule you describe. Obviously conquered peoples had to pay taxes (most of the cases, this meant they simply changed one lord with another), but I'd say that slaughter and mass slavery were exceptions...- Italian-wiseguy

How old is your waistline?
