I did. I even used google's "site:thefedoralounge.com" feature, but there wasn't too much information on buying Optimos online.. mainly because no store sells them.
Wear and tear. *Generally* a better item will be more durable (unless we're talking about cashmere). E.g.; Kangaroo leather is...
I was looking through an old thread on this forum - http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?21016-David-Morgan-feather-weight-panama/page5
Art Fawcett said:
We have all seen retailers ( heck, one of the largest, oldest hat companies in the world) list panama's as "Montecristi"s" where...
I have a[nother] question about straw hats.
I understand that Panama hats use natural straw, whereas most if not all Stetsons use shantung, or polyester.
Are shantung/polyester straw hats, say.. "not as good" as natural straw like Panamas or Optimo Milans, or is it simply a preference? For...
If Panamas are only woven in 2 cities in Ecuador, why do almost every single hat store state that they're made in either Italy or USA, depending on the maker?
Is the reason for that:
1) The hat is woven in Italy/USA, and hence isn't a Panama at all.
or
2) The hat is finished in Italy/USA, but...
Actually you can focus it even further. Type "site:thefedoralounge.com [query]" into google. You'll get everything relevant from the fedora lounge, and ONLY the fedora lounge.
So an example will be: "site:thefedoralounge.com panama hats"
Ok cool, thanks.
Also, why are Panamas considered so 'valuable'? Doesn't a tighter weave make it harder for air to pass through, which kinda defeats the purpose of a Summer hat? I thought ventilation would be a good thing in Summer.
True. To be honest, I don't believe that I'm stage where a 100% Beaver, or a Fur Felt hat makes any difference to me. Maybe in the future, but right now.. not really. Sure, there are certain 'bragging' rights that come with Custom made Beaver hats, or whatnot, and I can afford it but I'm...
Thank you.
Any help is good help. Thank you.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look @ Bobs as well. When you say all the offerings from Stetson are shantung, does that mean even what is supposedly called "Grade 8 Panama straw"? (Yes I know what "ALL" means, but this is completely new to...
I don't have a Panama to post in this thread (yet), but I'd like people's opinions here on something.
Does anyone own a Stetson Panama, and if so (or not), what is grade 8 Panama straw? Also, between Stetson and Borsalino Panamas, which would be a more well made item? The Borsalino costs...
Ok, based on the posts a few pages back, I gathered that most Straw Stetsons are shantung straw, unless explicitly stated otherwise, and that Milan is a braid, so there isn't a "Genuine Milan Straw."
However, I was looking through hats online again, and I came across these two Stetsons: Stetson...
Is it normal for the snap brim to not snap directly in front? Like V shape bend in the snap (imagine you're facing me, snap brims have an UPWARD curve in front and hence have a V bent) isn't centered. It's looks more like a Nike 'tick' rather than a boomerang.
Edit: Upon second look, it seems...
Ohhh. I see. Sorry, misunderstood that.
Why does everyone measure their head from a "neutral" point if you rarely ever wear your fedora straight across though? Wouldn't it be more accurate to measure your head at the angle your hat is going to sit?
I do, but I'm just curious (in a thirst for knowledge way), as in what exactly it means to have your hat "cocked." Just for like.. general knowledge.
What I mean by North/South or East/West, I mean like, Forward/Backward and Left/Right.
So is the term cocking used to describe how the hat sits on your head in a North-South or East-West direction?
Based on all the responses and information I've gathered so far, it seems to be on a left/right tilt thing rather than forward/back tilt.
