The pilot and first episode of X Files. Enjoyable, I shall continue with the series. I never really got why most of my girlfriends were crazy over David Duchovny but the penny's starting it's descent!
I really like Gillian Anderson too, even though her suits give me flashbacks to the...
Thank you for the compliments everyone. I was worried they'd look too "Harold Lloyd"/costumey but I think they work. Now I just need to get my eyes checked and the lenses replaced.
Thanks especially to BTB for the Joanne Woodward comment--in my book that's high praise indeed; she's one of...
Thanks girls!
Red, they really do stay on very well. The spring is perfectly calibrated--the glasses fit firmly but don't pinch. I wore them for pretty much a full day (laughed wrinkling my nose, read looking down, etc.) and they were fine. I hope I have good luck with the silver ones as...
Tonight You Belong To Me by Gene Austin
She's Got It by Ted Weems and His Orchestra
Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War by Paul Simon
Radio Free Europe by REM
Memories of You by Judy Garland
I've found prices go through cycles but on average for the larger size dresses would be around $40-$50 for plainer dresses, $60-$70 for novelty prints. I've seen nicer examples going for $120-$150 but that's too rich for my blood. However, you can get bargains--I snagged one of my favorite...
I got my first pair of pince nez in the mail today--I think I've found a new collectible! I think these are from the 1920s or 30s and I may put tinted lenses in them since they're a nice size for sunglasses. I'm expecting an exquisite silver pair later this week.
Sorry for the lousy...
I got a 1920s/30s pair in the mail today and I'm very happy with them. The spring tension is perfect--they feel solid on my face but they don't pinch my nose. I may have tinted lenses put into these as they are a nice size for sunglasses. I'm expecting an exquisite silver pair of pince nez...
What a great story! I have an autographed copy as well--she stopped by Minneapolis (must have been a book tour) and I stood in line to get her autograph when I was 13. Stupidly, I didn't get a picture with her. I still remember how tiny she was, even in huge heels.
Another good (out of...
As a collector I'm kind of partial to the blank backed cards, but the vintage geek in me loves to eavesdrop on the conversations of folks 100 years ago.
Many of my cards have very mundane messages like "I'm coming over for dinner tonight" or "Grandma says she's having a nice visit" in a...
Thanks for reminding me about Bacall's autobiography Katiemakeup--that's one of my favorites, although the recent update wasn't as good as the original in my opinion.
I love Paulette Goddard too--I'll have to find that book.
I collected avidly at one time, mostly holiday or royalty postcards from the turn of the last century. I love the colors, the graphics, and often the humor. If I had been seeking employment around 1900 I think postcard artist would have been high on my list of great jobs.
Anything by Barry Paris--his biography of Louise Brooks is one of my all time favorite books in any genre. I think his biography of Greta Garbo is the best one out there too.
Runnin' Wild and Bombshell by David Stenn are both great (about Clara Bow and Jean Harlow respectively)
As far as...
I love the doe eye on others but I can't carry it off--I think you need a bit of angle to your face for it to look really good and I'm all curves.
That Avedon link was fab--those women are the epitome of chic. I look at models today and for the most part I think "I'd never want to look...
