MaryMary, I feel your agony! I bought a 1920s silk dress on eBay for my birthday, and though it was advertised as being completely wearable with just one tear in the sleeve, it arrived in incredibly fragile condition with lots of little holes and is much too delicate to wear. It was really...
Much as I love my hair down, bad weather days are always updo days for me. I like to use a cute scarf as a turban, with a few spit curls peeking out around the rim. Very easy and low-maintenance, plus it makes me feel like Carmen Miranda or Norma Desmond (good things in my book lol).
Crazy Daisy, your dress is gorgeous! I agree with Miss Sis' belt suggestion. It reminds me a lot of the dress I posted about here; similar fabric, silhouette, and even the same type of modesty panel/flap in the front.
Ferula, I am in complete awe!! Those are magnificent!
Ditto to the espadrille fans... they're cheap, easy to find, and classic! I have a red pair and a white pair I wore almost everyday last summer.
I also have the Remix Brisas that I bought this fall (50% off, yay!); I can't wait to wear...
Yay! I hope we get lots more posts on this thread now that it's spring and beach weather is coming. I can't get enough of vintage sailor style!
I have been lusting after Edwardian and 1920s sailor dresses like the ones cherry lips posted... so I put together a "fake" 20s style dress using an...
OK, I don't have any good pictures, I'm afraid; these are all extreme crops from other pictures, so excuse the blurriness! Also, I just figured out how to do this style a few weeks ago, so my attempts are a bit messy (my bangs were really wonky the day I took these :eusa_doh:)
But here's a...
I have long hair, too, and I'm actually able to roll it up into a faux bob.
I set it in rag curls at night so it has texture, then I just comb the top and section the curls in half, like pig tails. Then I literally just roll each half up into a sort of horizontal tube and pin it into place...
sailor pants!
Hi ladies;
I recently got a complete WWII sailor uniform on ebay-- shirt, cap, wool pants, and white deck pants! I'm so smitten with these sailor trousers; they have perfect little anchor buttons, of course, and are surprisingly flattering for men's wear. The former owner (one...
Unfortunately they were much too big and I had to return them :(
I am usually a solid 9, but as 9.5 was the only size close to that in stock, I decided to try it out-- but alas, I couldn't walk in them without my feet coming out, even with a thick foot pad added! They were so gorgeous in person...
Cherry Lips: I'm in love with both the Brigitte and the Edwardian girls images!! So much fabulous inspiration :eusa_clap.
Penny Dreadful: We probably have about the same hair length (mine falls somewhere between my elbows and waist when straight); you probably don't want to hear this, but...
They are indeed; in the mint color, too! They are sooo gorgeous; definitely worth the splurge. The soles even have a floral print, and they're lined in velvet.
Eek, dresses B and E might be approaching cute in a darker color, but that bubblegum pink makes them look just silly.
I must say, I love how the dress manufacturers have labelled the top row as being for "date minded teens". Not sure any of those dresses would help a gal get a second date ;)
Oh dear... I've told myself "no new shoes 'til fall!!", but I just might have to bend that rule a little. I've been wanting some plain white low-heeled '30s looking pumps for a while, and those prices are amazing!
Pictures!
OK, here's the dress in question. I'm up at University right now, and most of my sewing notions are at home, so I'll probably put the elastic in when I'm home for Spring Break next week, but I took a few pictures with a little string belt inside the dress where the elastic would go...
Interesting; I'm afraid I'm no expert on the topic, but I've always noticed a strong Victorian influence in the wedding gowns of the late 30s/40s, with their high necks, buttons galore up the back, and variations on the leg-o'-mutton sleeve:
Oh, I'll gladly show you the finished result! I'm so excited to try this out... thank you all, both for the excellent advice and for saving my poor dress from becoming a shriveled mess.
Ohhh, i don't think I actually understood the elastic idea... I was picturing sewing the elastic all along the back of the dress, but I just reread and I realized how simple it is, with just two stitches at the side seams! I think I'll definitely try that out, then use my ribbon trick to cover...
That's a great trick, crwritt! I'm a little squeamish about altering my older garments-- I like to keep 'em as original as possible-- but fortunately this dress has little belt loops that I can hook a ribbon through to make a sort of drawstring at the back. Then just like you said, I can arrange...
