Last summer I went to a garage sale that advertised "lots of fabric, never used". I figured it was going to be the usual cutesy quilting cotton I usually find at garage sales, but instead it was someone getting rid of her mother's fabric and patterns. Some of the patterns were from the 30's. I...

I didn't read through the entire thread, so my apologies if this has already been expressed, but "you know you are old when you are old enough to be most of your co-workers teen moms, but then you find out you are actually older than a co-workers mother"
I still find this to be worded...
I have accumulated a great wardrobe of vintage style dresses that I've sewn for myself from vintage patterns ranging from 1940's-1960's. I work at a staged play theater as house manager and I wear them to work every day. I work in a fairly large city and with the theatre atmosphere, everyone...
I enjoy your blog posts about dyeing! I have cotton dress that was white when I bought it at the thrift shop, first I dyed it brown and then when I got tired of that I overdyed it purple. I also had a couple of floral printed dress I sewed for myself that after wearing a few times I overdyed...
I think it was more about marketing. Men were perceived as using whatever shampoo was available. Women were the one doing the marketing (well, in a married/family household) so they were the ones the ads reached out. They were the ones who would care if their hair was lustrous, growing faster...
And for the pomade, I find the tiniest bit on my fingertips is usually enough, start with less than you think, and then rub it across your palms, rub your hands over your hair, brush it through and then brush your curls over your palms. You hold the hair between your thumb and forefinger, and...
I use Lottabody setting lotion on my hair for wet sets, I'm in the US and buy it at Sally's Beauty Supply. For pomade, I use a beard pomade I bought for my husband that he doesn't really care for :) I've also made my own pomade from beeswax, olive oil and coconut oil, but his beard pomade smells...
What size foam curlers do you use? I use the green ones, I think they are the medium size. My hair always ends up super curly the first day, and then the second and third day are looser.
Which also brings up the question--how often does everyone wash and style their hair? I usually wash and...
This isn't exactly a purchase, more of an acquisition. The facebook page for the Costumer's Guide had a post a few weeks ago--a theater in Kalamazoo didn't have the space to store all of their costumes, so they were giving away some of the more damaged pieces. They went so quickly--I saw the...
I found these at the thrift shop last week for 8.00. I was returning to see if a pair of shoes I'd passed up earlier in the week were still there, sadly they weren't because I liked them a little bit better, they were similar but without the decorative leather strips. I haven't worn heels in...
I have a set of tools that are three different size tubes and three different width dowels, you drop the tube into the strap, and use the dowel to push the fabric through the dowel and right side out. I tried to find it them online and didn't see anything that looked exactly like it. The tubes...
This is my 1950's JC Higgins Colorflow
My husband found it at a garage sale a few years ago. I have to admit, I was a bit of shrew initially, we were on a very tight budget and he spent rather a bit for us at the time, and even more afterward because it needed brakes but I do love it...
So much of it is training, and how managers don't seem to care about training cashiers on handling money, probably because they weren't trained properly. Once again, I was taught to face the bills when someone paid me, as a courteous way of double checking the cash they had handed me. As a...
Exactly. I can't imagine anything so important that you need me RIGHT NOW. had a cellphone for about 6 months maybe 6 years ago, couldn't remember to take it with me, couldn't remember that I had it when I did remember it, couldn't remember how to even use the damn thing. I figure I live in the...
This is somewhat of a sore point with me :) I was trained at my first job to make change, and to count it back. You just hit "amount tender" on the cash register rather than keying in what the customer gave you. Later when I became manager of a coffee house I insisted on training the...
I've read that for a men's pants you need an average of 2.5 yards of 45" fabric, for a jacket, 2-3 yards of 45" fabric. Your fabric is wider, but as noted, will need extra yardage for to match the stripes. I would think you could get a jacket or pants but not an entire suit.
