    Food Network

I gotta agree. Food Network is pretty hack to me, though I have moments of appreciation for Alton, 'Iron Chef,' and Tony Bourdain. Anyone remember 'Great Chefs of the World'? Now that was a brilliant show. Show me knife techniques, tell me why you always hit a full soup ladle on the...

Can a man appreciate vintage and be metro?

Again, it entirely depends on what your definition of 'Metrosexual' is. If the term had existed 40 years ago, there would indeed likely be many men that we could agree would fall under the umbrella, and most likely many of them would not in fact have sexual identity issues, as many don't today...

Can a man appreciate vintage and be metro?

Ah, I see what you are saying Jack. I was more attempting to address those who feel a need to assert their definition of 'Metrosexual' as a "correct" one, or of using it as a negative judgment.

Can a man appreciate vintage and be metro?

I think that by both of you and perhaps by those you are acquainted with, it is taken to mean the definition you've laid out. Where I am originally from, where I am at, by many who have responded to this thread, and by me it does not necessarily imply that, nor in many other places. And I...

Can a man appreciate vintage and be metro?

'Metro sexual' seems to be a term that came into common use as a result of hippie/punk/grunge and even the hip-hop movement. Suddenly, men who wore sun-screen and belts were 'Metro sexual' because they were taking care to not get 1) skin cancer or 2) let their pants fall down to their ankles. I...

Why do I hate the 1970s so much?

Having (mostly) lived through them, the only positive thing about the 70's: 1) The Sex Pistols 2) Joy Division

    How Many of us Write?

I agree - it is done regularly, but the degree of success is negligible. Even with the appropriate amount of research, there are hundreds of ways to go wrong. Adopting any kind of affectation or cliche is truly risky; most often I find that such attempts fail horribly.

    How Many of us Write?

I am a writer. Short fiction, vignettes, plays, poetry, essays, wine/cinema/art reviews. I don't write in a modern or vintage style per se, just in mine, which I've been told is 'timeless' in that it doesn't specify or lend itself to any one time in particular. That's not an effort in my...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

So, why vintage? (Indeed - nice new icon Lizzie. I covet your kitchen just from the glimpse in the background.) So yesterday a couple of customers (after compliments) asked me why I dress vintage. It struck me that no one had asked that before, but it also struck me as bold and slightly...

    Desert Island Discs

While being a nearly impossible questions to answer (for the narrowing of the musics more than the likelihood of being stranded), here's a crack: * Rachel's: Music for Egon Schiele * Bach: Sonatas for Violin & Cello (BWV1001–1006 & BWV 1007–1012) * John Coltrane: A Love Supreme * The...

    Weird and Forgotten Movies

The weirdest and most forgotten-est film that I love terminally: "The Forbidden Zone," directed by Richard Elfman (Danny's brother). If you haven't seen it (and you probably haven't), it would actually mildly appeal to many in this forum. Much of it is done in black and whitem and it has a...

    Garden Party, are heels ok?

I believe vintage etiquette dictated that if a man was with a woman who was wearing heels and they encountered grass, he was to pick her up and carry her to avoid her aerating the soil with her heel spikes. So, if you are a going with a date you'd like to get a bit closer to... ;)

How to Look Good in Photos

For me the 45 degree thing works depending on what I'm wearing. If what I'm wearing is form fitting, from straight on my hips look disproportional to my chest because, well, my chest goes forward and it's hard to see the size and definition of it from a straight-on photo. I think I'm best from...

    Ghost world?

Well, I think it is in essence a result of the current age -- The Information Age, and no, I don't think it is a fad or that it will ever cease. As is the result of any 'Age', the world is entirely altered as a result. I have mixed, but mostly good feelings about it, largely for the reason...

How do you cope when unemployed?

Luck and good wishes your way. What's your field, btw? When I have been jobless I've consoled myself by relentlessly pursuing new jobs and having strict faith that it is all happening for good reason -- that where I was wasn't suited to me, and that where I'm going will be the perfect...
