    Panama Hat Thread

Can the hatter customize the size somewhat and change the oval shape, of previously-finished panama hat, without making the brim go wacky? I'm just a smidgeon over a size and, longer than normal oval. Getting a well-fitting hat has been elusive for me so far.

Looking for vented straw- semi-colado or similar

You might get better results by spelling it 'calado'. Let us know if you go with anything. I too am set on getting a vented straw.

    Reproduction classic workwear

Yes but those occupations also require physical exertion so, how often do you think you'll find them wearing leather garments other than gloves, aprons and footwear?

    Northwest Hats, Eugene, Ore.

Here it is, my first homburg. I chose Northwest Hats to make it for me because I like how the northwest does things. Without knowing proper terminology, I described to Mike how I wanted the brim binding to be. He knew exactly what I was referring to and how to do it (now I know - it's a...

    Reproduction classic workwear

I don't typically associate leather fashion with workwear. Leather has no ventilation qualities, thus not good to wear during physical exertion (other than as reinforcement to high-stress parts of the garment).

    Woolrich blends, fabrics, and dating

The blend is in the yarn itself. The fabric is a layer, woven from yarn. Nap is created on the surface of the fabric, by a napping process. The areas you've found, could be an instance where the napper missed but Woolrich still decided to use anyway. This photo is of a swatch that a woolen...

    Summer Hat Suggestions?

So would it be properly assumed that woven hats are typically made to regular oval shapes only, that trying to form a woven hat blank into a Long Oval would result in the same problem one faces when trying to do that with a finished hat made of felt - rippled brim?

    Summer Hat Suggestions?

You're right, Richard, those look to have good ventilation. Thanks! Now I hope someone can address my primary question: Can a summer (straw, leaf, grass, shantung, etc) hat be blocked to the Long Oval shape or, would that cause the brim to ripple? I'm not sure this thread is an...

    Summer Hat Suggestions?

I need help on summer-specific hats in the Long Oval shape. I don't have any non-felt fedoras that I'd want to wear in public so, it's time for me to consider getting one. My experience tells me that I need the Long Oval shape but, that's about the extent of what I know. Can someone summarize...

    USPS Sucks

US Postal Service is the one I prefer. The local post office is tops for helping me whenever I need it in this regard and is very convenient. In contrast, the nearest UPS and Fedex receiving centers are like 30 miles away from me. I hate when retailers insist on shipping via UPS or Fedex.

    Invisible Suspenders?

Are there any invisible suspenders which are compatible with, the buttons that already exist on the trousers? I'd rather not have to install something new on each pair of trousers.

    Filson Westlake Review

I'm surprised that someone from the midwest would be unfamiliar with mackinaw-cloth garments. I was under the impression that the mackinaw jacket was ubiquitous there.

    Double-vent winter coats?

Any guys have experience with these? I'd like to get one that's windproof, made of either wool, alpaca, llama or camel (or similar) fiber and, would appreciate advice on what's good amongst currently available examples. Bonus if it has a peacoat-style (or maybe an ulster-style) collar...

Help Finding Winter Coat for My Daughter

I hate down jackets, probably more than other garments. Unlike wool/alpaca/camel/llama fibers, down offers no insulation from the cold if it gets wet. A pox on Macy's for pushing such non-functional crap.

    Peacoat from "Major Coat Company"?

I ordered mine over the phone and asked specifically about this. Their chart you're referring to, which suggests to go up above the chest measurement (for example, a 42" chest should go with a size 44) is actually only for their Authentic model and, that the Navigator model can be worn...

    Peacoat from "Major Coat Company"?

I don't have a lot of peacoat experience but, I did just recently pick up the Navigator mentioned in your first question. It doesn't flop around. It has a great collar which stands up well. And yes, it's quite structured in the shoulders.
