I see what you are saying, but in all honesty, I would not use the word "b:p :p bs" in front of my professors at Berkeley. Nor in front of my aunts. Not in front of my niece, either. CERTAINLY not in front of my students. If I did, it would be a slip. Never "t#ts" either.
This is an excellent point and we are inching toward a definition here. And yes, I think a great deal of the issue is this idea that propriety = hypocrisy. And that idea did, in fact, become very popular in the 1968 "revolution."
Perhaps lexical items (i.e. words) and the cloth one puts on one's back are, in some grand sense, arbitrary indeed, but they are not arbitrary relative to the history that has immediately (and not so immediately) preceded them. If you take the "it's only arbitrary" argument too far, then...
That was very well-said, and I trust that all will understand that you are not trying to jump on anyone in particular - - because you're not. You are simply stating a general societal rule.
To me this is the essence of the issue at hand, and this is the post that people need to decide upon whether they agree or disagree. I agree with L.M. on this pretty wholeheartedly, and I link it to a lot of other trends.
For the record, although 1968 perhaps may be over-specific, I do not...
Nicest compliments I get are from blacks. Usually men over 30. The whites who compliment my fedoras are streetpunks and skaters. The insults are from whites about 20 years of age, males or females. Hispanics have never discussed my hats with me. Orthodox Jews say a thing or two, and I have had...
Well, I do know, sort of, what you mean; I really like this place, but occasionally there are things I'd ideally like to discuss with people that I think would be too far out for some people here. I'm not a Christian, for example, but MK is, and MK started this place, and I have gotten so much...
I do recall when European winemakers and wine drinkers did, yes, talk a lot of smack about US wines. This was before the current situation (whereby GOOD, not cheapo, California wines are exported to Europe in great numbers) took hold. In the early 1990s I worked in a really cool store that was a...
I use auctionsniper.com. I do not disagree that there are some morally dubious aspects to it, though. I figure that the reality is, I cannot be on the internet at the last moment all the time; plus, my home connexion speed is horrifically slow. I lost a fabulous Hugo Boss DB, brown with PINK...
I don't think that was the point. Only to BALANCE miscellaneous opinions with things that pertain more directly to what this forum is supposed to be about.
Your real horror, BK, is at epistemological nihilism, not at poor standards impoliteness, and I applaud your concern with the postmodern concept that reality is derived from consensus rather than something that exists independently of its observers.
But as long as a correction is issued...
Just read the whole entire bloody thread. My summary of the high points combined with some running commentary:
1. Baron, you are right that the balance needs to tip to more information and less fluff.
2. However, if the sandwich thread bothers you or anyone else, perhaps best not to read it...
I don't have any IJ movies neither. I do have Blade Runner, one of the crappy recent Star Wars films, Dark City, a whole lot of film noir, Brazil, some good horror and ... Gattacca.
I haven't seen the IJ films in 20 years. If someone wants to send me a boxed set, I'd be happy to accept. I did...
