Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Yes, from what I know your way of measuring is definitely not standard. You can see that in the sellers pics, he is measuring the way Peacoat lays out in his fitting thread. The one you bought and returned does look to me like a true 42R from his pics. My advice would be to re-read Peacoats...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Thanks. It sounds like the same size I found, but I always wonder about the way different people take measurements. And I also wonder whether it was modified somehow to make it so it won’t fit you? I tried but couldn’t find that seller, could you just link to the auction you won to make it easy...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Thats too bad. Is it possible it is a bridgecoat (overcoat) and not a Peacoat? Buttons being moved can also mess with the apparent size. Do you have any other measurements: length, arm length, did you verify chest; or any other pics? If you haven’t put it in the mail yet, take some pics. It may...

The spec for how the end product is made and what they need to look like: http://everyspec.com/MIL-SPECS/MIL-SPECS-MIL-O/MIL-O-2414H_33708/ If there are earlier specs that would be interesting too. Whoops on the sailor/soldier, no disrespect intended. Wasn’t sure about it when I wrote it. But...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

So what’s the update? How’s the fit? Peacoat, A couple recommendations that may make your Peacoat dating and sizing threads even better? Could you put a link to the online military Specification in one of your pinned threads - as it is the spec is hard to find, buried in this massive thread...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Good work finding a 22” wwii Peacoat in good shape! I was in the same position as you a few weeks ago, and for every size 40 and above, there seem to be 100 coats with sizes in the 30’s, often great condition and really cheap. Size 40-plus don’t necessarily sell for more, but they certainly seem...

Need advice: I have been unable to find a WW2 trench coat/greatcoat that can fit a 6'4+ male. I've been told they do not exist. Is this true?

As far as sizing advice, you are not measuring correctly. Men’s clothing is not sold on underarm length and weight. It is sold on chest size and height. Google it to find out how to correctly measure your son. My guess is that he needs either a 38xl or possibly a 36xl, but measure his chest to...

Where do I find someone with one of these? Have you had this done?

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Here in the US it’s easy enough to find the original Bakelite buttons, either eBay or I found them at my closest army/navy store. (Unfortunately I haven’t had same success finding one of the gold plated buttons I need since those weren’t used as much in the size I need). The ones you found in...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

So I looked up buttonhole repair on this forum (why didn’t I think of that before) and found that this Is probably best left to a seamstress, who can apparently handle this repair. Not something worth attempting without a lot of sewing machine experience, or lots and lots of time to do by hand.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

OK, so these were taken outside. Hopefully they show what you’re looking for. One thing I noticed by having it outside, is that there is a missing rectangular label in the center back lining below the collar. Would have been nice to have it, but there’s nothing left but the sewing machine holes...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

This is an iPad, not an iPhone. No built in light, so I used a flashlight in the above two pics. If those still aren’t good enough, I’ll take the same outside today.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I tried, but the pretty girl didn’t want to be in the picture. No sunlight so hopefully these will suffice. Point of these pictures being, on this coat the collar is narrower (2-3/4”) than the lapel (4-1/4”). On the ww2 coats I see, the reverse seems to be true. True or not? True on your 1930s...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

And one more question for now. This old coat is in excellent condition, except all the button holes on one side are blown out. No fabric tears, but stitching around holes gone. The unused sides button holes are all perfect (no surprise). Is this a repair that a seamstress/tailor can make, if so...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Hey, you wrote the book, of course you are infallible. After all, this is the Peacoat religion, isn’t it? So that was a surprise, I assumed this would be a ww2 issue coat and not earlier. When I looked at the collar again, I do see that it is quite a bit narrower than ww2 collars. Is this part...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Thank you. And sorry, I should have included a better pic of full jacket. The pic I included showed buttons, but was too dark. From the dating guide you wrote, wouldn’t this be war period or before? Or did I misunderstand your writing. Next question, there is no collar latch or buttons. Were...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Great, thank you. The other coat I just bought is a similar size, but unfortunately (for me) shorter length. Here are the pics. Would this also be a 42, and approximate year?

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

So I posted pics of my 1967 Peacoat a couple weeks ago, and really appreciate the help I got. I have found another, older, peacoat that I’ll post about, but first wanted to ask another question about the 1967 one. It is clearly marked 40xl, but when I measure it in the way described (flat...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Thanks again, that was very helpful. I asked one of the eBay sellers to measure the buttons they have for sale, hopefully they will answer. Now one last question about Peacoat button placement. I would have guessed that the inside button would have been placed exactly underneath the middle...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Great, thanks so much for answering. So unusual but historically accurate is what I was hoping to hear. Before it arrived I thought I would replace the metal buttons with plastic ones, but seeing it in person I actually quite like the gold against the midnight blue/black and will keep them...
