I think women look great in Bowlers. Apparently bowlers been showing up quite frequently in high fashion on women and men recently. Radiohead's lead singer is wearing one in their newest music video. Haven't seen any around Toronto, though, except at New Years and Nuite Blanche.

Magnificent find, Guv. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say it's from the mid 80s or 90s. The sweatband looks like it's still genuine calfskin, but it looks like a step on the way to being one of the heavy reconstituted bonded-leather ones they use on all the hats nowadays. Dunn & Co went bankrupt...
And now some famous bowlers auctioned off a few years back. Not sure if these have been posted on this site before, but I think they're kind of interesting.
Malcolm McDowell's iconic hat from A Clockwork Orange. Sold for $8000.

I noticed that one too, the colour and shape are really nice. I can basically guarantee almost all of them are fur-felt given their condition/age. Wool simply doesn't last that long. Certainly the Lock ones are fur as they never made wool bowlers. Presumably an uninformed staffer just assumed...
Thanks guys. Discovered this interesting little collection at the Met today:

Here's a photo of one of the hats (from the 1880s):
In Toronto they seem to be having a slight comeback. Every day I see a number of hipsters, musicians, and students wearing fedoras, as well as older men. Stingy brimmed, small crown fedoras that are too small for their wearer seem to be a trend within the gay community as well. But overall...
Indeed it is a very good movie, and I thought it was funny given that the sides flare out & I'll be sticking little 'pieces of flare' on the inside.
Learned something new about Lock hats. Lock has confirmed that it was probably made between the 1960s and 1980s, as they stopped manufacturing...
Speaking of flare, for the sake of vanity I asked and got Lock to agree to send me some of the old letters to stick inside and customize the hat.
Only 3 pieces of flare
Hey Brad,
Good to see you're posting on the lounge again!
As for the top hat Bowler evolution, that seems like a reasonable supposition, though the English themselves now seem to only manufacture the straight-sided ones (at least, such is my experience with modern Christys and Dunn & Co...
Hey Alan,
7 1/2 - 7 5/8 US size. Really depends on the conform and whether I've had a haircut recently, and it also depends on the style of the hat. I can wear 7 1/4 fedoras just fine, but not toppers/bowlers.

Vintage xl lock & co bowler hat
A little over a week ago I went on to ebay to look at hats (something i've been avoiding lately in order to save money, as I'm sure many of you will understand). I had no intention of buying anything, but just thought I'd see what the prices were doing and what...
Really like the shape of that hat Bowlerman, though I agree with you as to the material. My thought is that all hat types look better in fur than in wool, and even if that's not 100% true, fur is more durable and thus a better value if you want your hat to last. But honestly, it's still an...
Fantastic find Alan! I'm a really big fan of petersham silk top hats. I think they're often overlooked in favor of satin/plush toppers, but the vertical ribs really look quite elegant. And this hat in particular is in magnificent condition. If only I could find one in my size :'(

Crofut & Knapp Bowler
This looks like quite a nice derby, but a few sizes too small for me. Thought i'd share for you bowler/derby-hat fans in case you hadn't seen it:

It's still a fine looking hat, Bowlerman. In the photo, I didn't notice any of the flaws you mentioned. Still quite an excellent bowler.
Christys hats are a very specific style, with a fairly flat, understated brim curl (though it's the closest to the classic brim curl i've found available at...
Lol perhaps. It's interesting to hear about the Christys' wool felt. I'm honestly surprised that it is actually heavier than the fur felt, while still being slightly softer. Must be quite a hat!
