I think that it's not nessessary to have floor length as formal anymore. It really just depends on what you'd like to do! And a shorter dress can be dressed up with jewelry and heels. Though I do get the not wanting to wear black to a wedding! I wouldn't either :)

Thank you so much!!! We're so very happy and we're so happy about our new life together.
We're so thrilled. He's like my other self. And I know people say that all the time, but really... it's true :)
We were both independently interested in vintage and antiques for a long time before...
Okay, I'll speak my peace then leave.
I sell on ebay. A lot, when my job at the Opera isn't going. I'll say that last year it was my most consistent stream of income.
Here's one thing to consider- as a small business in California, there is no way I could turn a profit if it weren't for...
Maybe something like this? There's only one size left and I'm not sure what size you are, but if you go into a store or call they can find one for you in another store :) I recently had to do that for a friend's wedding.
I ditto a 50's style dress :) The print wouldn't allow for anything other than a straight cut on the skirt, so it would suit it perfectly! If you don't like the bulk at the waist, maybe a drop waisted one with the skirt pleated into the yoke?
It is true... and there is no "golden rule" for authenticity... like I said, or meant to say, not everyone looked like a model or movie star! Trying to live up to that standard would be so disheartening and in my opinion, there's many more things I'd rather be doing than looking in a mirror and...
Hey all!
Just wanted to let you know if you didn't already, that I'm engaged! Matt (Powerhouse) asked me around Christmas at the Met Museum and I said "yes!" We're getting married this autumn on the Berkeley, an 1890's ferryboat at the Maritime Museum here in San Diego. So yay! Just...
I am critical, moreso of myself than anyone else, but I have to say it really bothers me when someone is very vocal about their "authenticity" and they don't actually a) have it true to period or b) base their "authenticity" solely on film and high end fashion magazines. I wish the so-called...
Everything pre-early 40's was unprinted due to the fact that McCall held the copyright to them. Simplicity was the next, and offered printed patterns AND perforated patterns simultaneously, with printed being more expensive. It should say "Printed" on the envelope. By the mid-40's the big...
I love the expos, though they have changed a lot since I started going (back in 94? Maybe?). Before there were a lot of collectors and many people showed up with 40's and earlier clothing. Now I've noticed there's been mostly wearable stuff present and more designer names even up to the...
I've been pocketing away vintage children's patterns for a while now, and quite a few vintage kids clothes have found their way into my hope chest. Kids clothes now are so ridiculously priced, I figured I'll end up making mine someday (this is before school age cause no one wants their kids...
Ditto what everyone else said. Most of the time I wear 40's shoes even with 30's just because they are so much more comfortable. I have a few pairs of 30's shoes I reserve for very special occasions just because I know they're getting rarer and rarer and anything old sooner or later will fall...
WOW. I am in love with your 30's patterns, LD.
Kamikat, Chatelaine was a magazine for needlework. I'm assuming that it came from the magazines, and most women's magazines of the period had mail order patterns. You'll see ones for Farmer's Wife, and others. Of course McCall and Vogue came...
