I think it's meant to show the sheen of the silk. Or something like that. Or maybe it's going for the vintage-tie-that's-been-faded-by-the-sun look. Either way, it's pretty bad.
I love the simplified silhouette on this one, and it'd be even better if the repeat were slightly more spaced out and on a different ground color. I like both the red and the silver.
The ribbon on yours is much like a thinner version of the ribbon on a vintage Resistol I just got for my dad for Father's Day. Both look great.

I've heard of this being successful, but the collar band on a collar-attached shirt is often taller/wider than the ones on tunic shirts. It may have to be reduced somewhat--which may or may not be possible, depending on the placement of the front buttonhole.
One other note--realize those...
At one time ('30s and earlier, I think), all hats that we now call fedoras were referred to as "soft hats." This was in distinction to top hats and bowlers, which are more formal than soft hats and are naturally stiff.
But I know what you meant. :)
I've learned here that when you reblock a felt hat, you can gain some crown height by sacrificing brim width. Is the same true for straws?
I'm guessing it isn't, since Panama bodies are woven with the crown-and-brim shape built in, rather than the conical shape of a felt hat body. But if...
One major exception: sack suits in the American trad/Ivy League tradition, which gained prominence after WWII, always have flat fronts and nearly always have cuffs.
I don't think that flat fronted pants really became popular for general wear until the war, when cloth rationing clamped down on...
Sorry, Flieger. As Alan said, a Topy or oversole is a layer of textured rubber that is glued to the bottom of the leather sole. A toplift is sort of the same thing on the heel.
I hear you. Last time mine came back from the cleaners, it had a little tag on letting me know that they had paid special attention to it but still weren't able to get out the stains.
Any cobbler or shoe repair shop should be able to install a rubber oversole (often called a Topy) for $20 or less. He may be able to do rubber toplifts on the heels, as well.
Hadn't seen them before, but I'd be skeptical about the quality. The technology to make proper silk plush for top hats hasn't existed for decades, and if someone had found a way to do it again, I think we'd have heard about it.
New fur felt toppers run about $400, and refurbished vintage...
The occasional AA illustration and Churchill photo notwithstanding, I think I have a problem with a notch lapel jacket as a stroller, especially if it doesn't have a matching waistcoat. The stroller just seems to beg for peak lapels.
This is the trouble. You'd be extremely unlikely to find trousers that match. For blacks to look OK together, they practically have to be cut from the same bolt of cloth. Even different bolts of cloth from the same manufacturer can look slightly different because of differences in the...
